((^_^ He almost never gets depressed, but when he does, it's bad.))
"You always seem like a complete idiot," Race pointed out. "So it's probably one of the things she likes about you."

"Any time, Cowboy." He puffed on his new cigar. "You should get advice from Mush. He's got a girl now. Maybe even a serious one this time."

"Mush? No way...I don't believe it," Jack said.

He nodded. "Her name's Ershey. Very pretty, kinda mysterious. He don't talk about nothing else. Me and Blink are still bachelors, though. I guess we could get a dingy apartment, and I could turn it into an amateur casino," Race mused, upgrading his prospects just a little.

"You know you'd probably make a fortune," Jack said with a grin.

"A fortune would be nice. Maybe I'd retire to some tropical island. Nice and peaceful..." Yes, the drama was definitely getting to him. He missed the days when he had nothing better to do than lounge around in the bunkroom with Jack, Blink, and Mush, playing poker or shooting craps or even marbles, talking about girls or mercilessly mocking each other.
He missed waking up next to Flick, his old redheaded flame, after a night at the casinos, and thinking fondly how cute and how much fun she was, instead of waking up next to Sapphy after they both went through hell and thinking she was so beautiful and untouchable that he kind of wanted to die.
"Sometimes...I feel like we're getting old, you know?" he said with a slightly bitter smirk, seeing as they were both just seventeen.

"Why? Are we getting drunk?" he asked hopefully.

Jack thought about it for a second. "I wouldn't mind getting completely drunk."

"I'm in," Race said instantly. "Let's go to O'Reagan's. I'm feeling Irish today."

"Let's go," Jack grabbed his cowboy hat and plopped it on his head as they headed out the door.
