Race cringed at the memory and glanced at Sapphy to see how she was taking this. "We must've passed at least three cops, but they were all Italian, and we looked Italian, and all of Little Italy is like a miniature Mafia where you overlook everything anyone does unless they're tourists, so they left us alone. But we must've had half the neighborhood gaping at us, and then this girl comes running down the street..." He chuckled. "Sophia, the waitress from Mama's. Sweet girl, terrific cook, and a little bit insane. She's waving her arms and pointing around the corner and yelling, 'We have spaghetti! Best spaghetti in town! You come!'"

Sapphy was slowly turning red from trying not to laugh so hard. She nodded gamely at Race, urging him to continue.

"So we had the best spaghetti in town with three more glasses of wine...when I woke up with my face in it the birds were chirping and the sun was coming up. That's when I knew we'd be friends for life." Raven said laughing.

Sapphy was speechless, trying not to smile.

Race eyed Sapphy suspiciously, afraid he'd never hear the end of this. "And that's the story," he said with a dramatic, drunken flourish of his hand, "of the spaghetti."

Sapphy finally burst out laughing, clutching her stomach.
"That was the most marvelous thing I've ever heard!"

"And probably the most ridiculous, not counting the time we ended up in Staten Island," Raven said.
