"If I play my cards right, it'll be worth it." Tristan said to Race. "You don't think I know what I got myself into? I do...I can't make this kind of money in a factory and I want Nevada off the streets. My kids need at least someone who's stable, who'll be there."

"Who'll be there," Race emphasized, "not dead in a ditch." He sighed. "Look, I know I can't talk you out of this, and I'm sure as hell not gonna tell anyone, but if you really think I'm not gonna be checking up on you in case this goes wrong, forget it. I don't have a family or a girl or even anything resembling life ambitions, so you don't get to do this and then complain that I might get myself killed."

"I hear ya Race, I think about it constantly, but I got a plan alright?" Of course Tristan did, he knew he constantly had to be on his guard around Alex. The golden boy had returned and he knew Alex was questioning why, and he hadn't actually given him a definitive answer. He had to play this just right.

Race remembered how there had been a plan to deal with Sammy and Hunter, but even in his current mood, he wasn't about to probe a wound that deep. "Yeah, well, at least let me know if your plan goes south. Or if you ever want me to keep an eye on things at your place." Race wasn't usually the type to go sneaking around, but he was already thinking he might keep an eye on Tristan's place no matter what.

"I will, I already got some of the guys watching Nevada," He commented, "How's Rae doing?" Tristan asked with a smirk. "I didn't tell him so relax."

Race imagined sending guys to follow Sapphy around--imagined feeling like he had to do it--and realized that lately, he was feeling less like a Brooklynite every day.
"She's doing a lot better," he said with a fond smile. "Hanging around with Sapphy a lot. Hope Spot's not going completely out of his mind."

"Wishful thinking, he's losing it and is trying to track her down. What the fuck made her run off like that? Its beyond me, but if she's doing better maybe it was the right choice." Tristan said with a shrug. "So you really ain't gonna tell me how much you won?"

"She's doing better," Race said, leaving it at that, because he didn't go around repeating things that Raven told him while sobbing in his arms. "And no, 'cause you'll want a cut, and you're already getting paid." He smirked.

"You're an ass," Tristan said with a laugh as they started walking out of the alleyway. He rubbed his shoulder with one hand. "One thing I'll tell, I didn't miss my body feeling like it was gonna crack it two."

"Alcohol usually helps," Race informed him. Not that he had any experience boxing, just run-ins with loan sharks and living with Spot.

"I know..." Tristan sighed heavily, "But I can't keep hitting the bottle every night."

Race shook his head, because the only other solution was to stop doing this thing that was clearly insane, and he'd already suggested that. "Well, I'm going home. To Duane Street. To horde my money and hang out with people who are relatively sane. Try not to die."

"Thanks Racetrack, I appreciate it," Tristan and shook his head. "Race...I know you think I'm nuts for doing this, but I don't know what the hell else to do."

"I know." Race wished he had some kind of helpful advice, but the fact was, most of them ended up trapped sooner or later in some kind of situation they couldn't get out of. "Well, if it all goes wrong and you end up trying to bring down Alex Wisely, I'll lend you my epic skills, such as they are." Basically swooping injured girls into carriages and fighting if he had to, unless Alex miraculously agreed to settle the matter with a poker game.
