The ducks in Central Park were awesome. Leo loved the way they swam laps around the pond, and how they had the freedom to just fly where ever and whenever they wanted. Ducks also had this grace about them that other animals didn't have; it was a beauty that Leo was convinced he was the only one in the whole city that actually noticed it.
On this particular spring afternoon, Leo had just wrapped up selling the afternoon edition and was watching six ducklings swim after their mother in perfect formation. He nibbled on an apple a vendor had given him an exchange for one of his papers and felt the sun warm his skin.

Sapphy had only been a newsie for a little over a week -- she was still getting used to rising early with the sun in time to get her papers.
She cut through Central Park, ready to take a break and get some grub when she recognized a boy from her lodging house. Should she say hello?

Leo recognized Sapphy as she approached and gave her a warm friendly smile. He remembered that she was new, and they had only briefly met when she first showed up last week.
Turning back to the ducklings, he chuckled a little as one began to swim in circles away from the group. "New York in the spring," Leo began to Sapphy, gesturing towards the ducks, "there isn't anything else like it. "

"I suppose," she shrugged, smiling at the duckling. "Don't know spring much elsewhere." Sapphy laid her newspapers down and sat down next to them in the green grass.
"What's your name again? I'm sorry -- terrible with names but fantastic with faces."
((Sorry for my sparseness, dear. I'm catching this between classes.))

((it's fine I'm a work))
"Leo" he offered, offering her his hand. "Sapphy, right?"

"Right," Sapphy laughed, still adjusting to the nickname. She took Leo's hand and shook it eagerly. "How are you?"

"I'm pretty good. And how are you?" Leo talked rather slowly, as he was a bit self conscious of his accent- his English was practically flawless at this point, but not perfect. "How's the selling going?"

"Más o menos," Sapphy replied with a rather pleased grin. "I'm still getting used to it."

Leo grinned, now gesturing towards the empty seat next to him on the bench. He always loved when white people were familiar with Spanish. "Hablas Espanol?"

Sapphy stood up and happily sat next to Leo, already comfortable around him.
"Sí, un poco. Aprendí en escuela."

"Really? They taught you Spanish in school?" Leo was surprised. An American school teaching their students Spanish? "Where did you go to school?"

"Ah, sorry. I don't know the word for it... In school, but by a tutor. Da busted his ass for me to learn. He thought it'd be handy for me to learn español."

"A....private tutor?" Leo asked, narrowing his eyes, trying to understand. Was this girl saying that she came from riches?

"No, it was me and three other students. We just paid the school a little extra for time after classes got out. I think some kids could also take Russian from the janitor..."

"And you were interested in learning Spanish?" Leo was very impressed. Nobody respected his native language.
