"I don't think I'm very good at this game," Raven said with a shrug and a half smile. Raven decided to fold and then watched the other players with rapt attention. She could beat all these idiots with her eyes closed.

The hand went to the cocky Irishman, who sneered at Racetrack and patted Raven's arm consolingly. "Better luck next time, darlin'."
It took all of Race's training to keep from laughing as another hand passed in about the same way. Soon enough, it would be time for Rae to sweep the floor with them. "All right, enough playing around," he announced, turning his frustration on Raven again. "Show us your money, girl, I'm gonna drive you outta this game." The other players let out various whoops and hollers, clearly eager to see Race beaten, no matter who had the honors.

Raven shrugged and bet two bits on the hand. "Well...I guess we'll see how it goes." She smiled at the Irishman and brushed her decoletage seductively with the edge of her finger. God this guy was easy. It also meant that she had a high pair so far.

Race's inner twelve-year-old boy giggled as he tried to remember who had come up with that particular signal. A pair, huh? She could try to draw to something higher, but it would be best if they could knock a bunch of their opponents out of the game. So he raised the pot as high as he dared, and sure enough, there was folding all around. Don't look at me like that, fellows, I'm not gonna win this one.

Raven bet again, raising the pot even higher. "I just feel good about it." She actually let herself start to look nervous as another round of bets entered the pot. Soon it was between her and Racetrack.
Raven laid down her cards, a pair of kings.

Race had three of a kind. He tossed down only two of his fives and cursed loudly. A laugh went up from the group, and the dealer patted Raven on the back and said, "Now you're getting the hang of it, honey!" Race narrowed his eyes. "Lucky hand. We'll see how the next one goes."
Oh, they were going to be so rich.

Raven beamed brightly and collected her winnings. She won the next hand and the one after and the one after that. God she could play innocent so well.
"Must be beginners luck," She said with a sweet smile and collected another large pot, pulling it over to her side with both arms.

Race appeared to be getting angrier and angrier, while the other players were in various stages of confusion, annoyance, and intense amusement. Luckily, the latter seemed to be winning out.
"'S'all right, fella, I'll buy you a drink later," one guy said sympathetically, patting Race on the back. People were a whole lot nicer to you once you started losing. Race made himself look downcast. In fact, he did regret wasting a few excellent hands, but overall, he knew the strategy would pay off. And he got such a mischievous thrill from manipulating everyone--raising the pot to drive them out of the game when Rae's cards were lousy, betting low or folding to keep them in when her hand was good. Meanwhile, her bets were always low, and the boys never suspected a thing. They made a beautiful team.
"I'm gonna call it a night soon," he announced, cutting a quick glance at Raven to see if she was okay with that. They could win a lot more, but every hand was a risk, and he really wanted to hear her news.

As soon as she was able to cut out of the game without screwing up the entire hustle Rae did. She kissed the burly Irishman on the cheek and headed for the door. Raven hoped that Racetrack would follow behind her eventually.
She waited outside for him, when he finally showed she smirked at him.
"We made a fortune."

"I know," Race said delightedly. Between card games, well-placed bets, and his winnings from the selling contest, he was actually becoming an unusually wealthy newsie. Just as well, with summer coming to an end. "Thanks for that, Rae. You were fantastic!"

"It was nothing," She said with a shrug. Raven stared at him for a little while and bit her lip.
"So..." She stepped over to him and looped her arm in his, starting to walk with him. "You hungry? I think we should go to Mama's."

Race noticed her expression and wondered about it, but he figured she'd explain when she was ready. "Let's do it," he agreed. "It's been a while." In fact, the last time had been when she'd asked him to help with the Sammy situation. Lot of help he'd been there.

Once they were situated in a booth and served drinks Raven took a deep breath and decided it was time to tell him.
"I'm moving out of the lodging house," She figured she'd start with that, it would be easier. Raven took a sip of her iced tea.

Race sipped his own tea, which was hot--a nod to the Irish side--and nodded. "I figured you'd go back to Brooklyn. I heard about you and Spot." He grinned and decided not to mention that he'd heard it from an unfortunate girl who had woken up in the bunkroom at a very bad moment. But it seemed like Raven had more to say.

"Really?" Raven sighed heavily, "Well that's a relief...there's a whole nother mess of problems now which is nothing new, but he got himself a really good job and I can quit working for Carmichael." She fiddled with her fork and the bit her lip.
"I'm gonna have a baby...definitely having a baby." She started to smile as she looked at Race. "That's basically why we got back together otherwise he'd be marrying Annabelle Carmichael and I'm really...I dunno how I feel about it." She sighed. "He's still engaged to her."
