"It makes a difference for me," she said softly, a little offended.

"Well, I wasn't sure. You said it's never been a big deal. But, uh...I'm glad."

"Yeah, it's not a big deal but that doesn't mean I don't care, Race."

He nodded. "I'm glad we both care. I'd be kinda miserable if you ran off and left me in the morning," he joked. Well, mostly joked. He bunched up the empty pastry bag and shot it expertly into the trash.

Sapphy remained in her seat.
"I know I'm a slut, Race. But I'm not that cheap."

"You're not a slut! And I didn't mean it that way. I know you care, I just...don't wanna mess this up. By making too big a deal, or too small a deal, or..." He sighed. "I might possibly be kinda nervous about this, all right?"

"I don't think you could mess this up even if you tried," Sapphy said softly. "Because it is you." She smiled at him, a little shy.

He smiled back, equally shy, and they were maybe kind of adorable for a minute there.
"...would I be insensitive if I mentioned papers again?"

"Yes, especially when there's an empty bunk room back at the lodging house at this point." She couldn't help but blush a little.

He thought about that. True, there was no one there now. And Copper still currently hated him, but then, Copper would probably always hate him. But someone might come in to get something they forgot, or finish selling early, or use the washroom, or...
Yeah, he was delaying. He smiled at her. "We could give it a try if you want."

Sapphy knew it wasn't the most sure thing, but...
"Hey, at least we can make out?"

"Exactly!" Race said happily, getting up and feeling quite optimistic about life again. No, it wasn't financially responsible to spend a day like this, but...seriously, when did 'Racetrack Higgins' and 'financially responsible' belong in the same sentence?

Sapphy beamed and stood up from the table, brushing crumbs off her clothes.
She looked up at Race, demeanor growing quiet. She allowed herself to kiss him once, but her lips lingered on his -- a silent promise of more to come.
"Bakery. Check," she whispered as she pulled away.

He grinned. He'd have to write down the list at some point. And hide it somewhere no one would ever look. He grabbed her bag. "Shall we?"

"We shall," Sapphy said, holding the second handle of the bag so Race wasn't carrying it by himself. Plus they could hold hands this way.
