"Out on the street from Tibbys," said Ershey. "Can we possibly switch?" Risk grabbed ahold of Ershey, his hand around her waist.

"That depends. Which one hits harder?"
In answer, Beth stirred and started slamming her fists into his back. Race hurriedly offered her to Ershey and caught Risk before he could fall. "Uh...hi. Racetrack Higgins, pleased to meet you."

"I'll take Macbeth," said Ershey, ready to make the exchange. "She knows me better... So she probably won't hit me."

He nodded and handed her over. Macbeth wrapped her arms around Ershey happily. Race grabbed Risk again and made a valiant attempt to peel him away from Ershey.

"Thanks," she muttered, glad to have run into someone else. If Mush would've found out...
"Hey, why'd we switch?" stammered Risk, trying to get ahold of Race.

"You're apparently nicer'n her," Race informed him, nodding toward the girl flopped over Ershey's shoulder. "C'mon, we ain't that far..." He headed down the street, towing the random boy along with him. This was actually not that different from the way most of his nights seemed to end.
"So, uh, you've known her a while?" he asked Ershey doubtfully, referring to Macbeth. They seemed like an unlikely pair of friends.

"Actually, yeah," said Ershey, chuckling softly. "Met her about a couple years ago when we lived in the same lodgin' house... a bit rough around the edges but she's not that bad once you get to know her."
"That's true!" slurred Risk, grabbing hold of Race's arm to keep from falling over.

"Oh," Race said, trying to figure all this out. "So, uh...are you two..." he asked Risk, looking from him to Macbeth and back as they approached the lodging house.

"Me and Macbeth?" muttered Risk, looking at Race in confusion. "Oh, no no no! Er, M-maybe?"
Ershey rolled her eyes, determined to get back to the lodging house.

"NO!" Macbeth yelled from her position on Ershey's shoulder, though how she had actually managed to follow the conversation in her state was a mystery.
Race looked from one to the other again and shook his head. "Uh...all right, then..." He sighed as they came up to the porch, and went about half-lifting and half-dragging Risk up the steps.

"Almost there," muttered Ershey as she led Macbeth up the porch and towards the door. She opened the doorknob with her free hand, letting the boys go in first.

Very much relieved, Racetrack dumped Risk on the couch, leaving room for Macbeth beside him. "Tell me we don't have to get 'em up to the bunkrooms," he begged Ershey. "They'll be fine down here." If he didn't put his foot down at some point, he was going to develop a martyr complex.

"This is as far as I'm goin' to take them," sighed Ershey, letting Macbeth fall next to Risk on the couch. Risk mumbled incoherently as he wrapped his arm around Macbeth.
"Thanks for showin' up," said Ershey, looking over at Race.

Race laughed. "It was kind of an accident, but you're welcome." He glanced at the drunks, sighed again, went to the kitchen, poured a giant glass of water, came back, and set it by the couch. "Drink and don't spill it," he ordered Risk, who looked slightly more alert. "How are things going with Mush?" he asked Ershey, heading up the stairs.

Risk nodded, taking the glass of water from Risk. He took a big gulp before nudging Macbeth so that she would do the same.
"Um, not too well, actually," whispered Ershey as she gestured to Risk. "He doesn't like how I hang around him too much."
