She raised her eyebrows at him pointedly, a small smile peeking out from the corner of her lips. "And what, pray, would be better than a Santa Fe sunset?" Maybe she'd never seen it, but the way she heard Jack talk about it, it sounded like heaven itself beaming over the horizon.

"Ya know? I got no idea," Jack smiled at her. "Hey, thanks for fixing my button."

Sapphy watched the entire conversation silently. She looked Stagey over a little knowingly.

Jack stood up and cleared his thoat, "I uh, guess I should go. The rain's probably stopped by now." He raked his fingers through his hair.

"Oh?" Her face fell, and she flinched. She rather despised it when her feelings showed on her face like that, especially when they concerned her -- whatever they were -- for Jack. "If you must." She cast a sidelong glance to Sapphy. Was her little party dissolved already?

"I think I'll stay a little longer. Have some girl talk," she grinned up at Jack. "See you back at the lodge, Santa Fe?"

After all of this embarrassment she'd caused herself, some girl talk would do her a world of good. She nodded to Sapphy, breathing a grateful little sigh. It was nice to be around someone who wasn't instantly keen on spilling secrets to Jack.

"Yea see you later." Jack waved good bye and left.

Sapphy was never one to demand explanations or for people to tell her their feelings... You know, unless they wanted to. But she was always horrible at hiding those knowing smiles.
When Jack left and she turned back to Stagey, that smile was poised on her face.
"So, uhm..."

Stagey let out a breath as soon as he'd left the building, giving Sapphy a helpless glance. "Perhaps the bravest and the most worthy to lead out of all the newsies," she said to her, sitting near her on the small windowseat, "but he also happens to be the most impossible."

Well, there went her minor explosion of emotion. "I shouldn't have," she supposed, poking at a spool of thread on the floor with her toe. "What's really in California?" she suddenly asked. Jack always said that moving out west was for the space or the weather, but she sensed a weight to Sapphy's ambitions that she couldn't help but to ask.

"My family's already heading out that way," she said, feeling comfortable enough with Stagey to say so. "I'm waiting for their word to come join them."
She didn't say their last letter was months ago.

"Must have been hard, staying behind." She shifted her weight a little. "When my Ma went to America, she took me with her. It was scary, I suppose, but going to California must be so... pretty and open."

"They're not there yet, but it didn't take very long before my brother's letters made it start to seem that way," Sapphy said, a little dreamily. "I can only assume California is ten times what he's seen so far..."
She again didn't mention that yes, it was torture staying behind.
