The waiter practically ran back to the kitchen, clearly desperate to get away from them. Race smiled brightly at everyone, determined to make this not awkward. "So...Kathryn, tell us about yourself! It must be exciting, being the mayor's daughter and all..."

"If by 'exciting' you really mean 'tedious' and 'boring,' then you would be correct." Kathryn replied, taking her napkin and smoothing it over her lap.
"Going to benefits where all the guests are at least twice your age, listening to hour long speeches about the economy, smiling and nodding when you actually have no idea what's going on..."

"Aww, sorry to hear that," Race said, quite genuinely. It sounded kind of horrifying. No wonder she was hanging out with a bunch of newsies. "You got any friends to help you through it?"

"Yes. Some." Kathryn replied in a tone that clearly stated she didn't want to talk about it any further.

"You should just spend time with us," said Ershey casually as if it were nothing. "We're more fun, anyway."

"And we're much more age appropriate," Sapphy grinned a little mischievously.

"Exactly." Race grinned, then turned to Sapphy. "Hey, Sapph, mind if I run out for a smoke before the food comes? I thought maybe Mush'd wanna join me..." He gave Mush a look. He'd explained Ershey's boyfriend troubles to Sapphy before they walked in, but he could only hope that Mush would agree to step out for a minute.

"What am I? Your mother? Why're you askin' me?" she teased.

"You're my date!" he countered, whacking her in the arm with a napkin and grinning.

Sapphy grinned back.
"So I suddenly have to care if you want a smoke break?"

"Nah, that's too much responsibility. I'll just leave it to Mush."

Race pulled out an extra cigar and offered it to Mush. "Whaddaya say?" He managed, with an effort, not to send a sidelong glance toward Ershey.

"Yeah... Sure." Mush caught Race's glance at Ershey and was now extremely scared. What the hell...? He stood up, however, and followed Racetrack outside.

Race lit his cigar and attempted to be totally casual. "So, uh...we ain't really talked in a while. Me and Blink have been kinda worried." He realized it was a bit of a stretch to suggest Blink had been worried, or even noticed, but it was worth a try. "Anything going on?"
