"Oh, c'mon," Race said happily when they'd finished screaming. "You know it felt good." He took her arm and continued across the bridge. His heart practically jumped out of his chest at the sudden clamor of the docks and the boys running everywhere--some of them calling out greetings to him, even though he barely recognized them anymore. It felt strange to walk right past them and head for Rae's apartment, but also kind of a relief.

Raven smiled, "strange huh? To not be heading into the lodging house?" She asked him.

"Very. And to know that Spot's not sitting up there." He pointed at Spot's old perch above the river, which was empty. Apparently, Freddy hadn't dared to take it over. He looked at Raven and shook his head only half-jokingly. "Rae, we're getting so old!"

Raven laughed and pulled him along. "I know! Race, I'm having a baby! It's insane!"

"And I'm seeing someone who I might actually have a future with. And neither of us is drunk or at a card table right now. How did we come to this?" He smiled wryly and glanced over his shoulder once at the distant view of the docks before following her down the street.

"No clue...well I'm lying, I know how I got where I am, too much sex. Way too much sex. It was bound to happen sooner or later." She shrugged.
"You know, I miss it just a little...the lodging house.n

"Me too," Race admitted. "The Brooklyn one, I mean. It was always kinda...livelier there." More gambling, more fights--it appealed to the slightly crazy side of him that loved taking risks, the side that had been dampened a little by three years in Manhattan. Maybe that was for the best, but he missed it nonetheless.
((Dude, an entire possible plotline for Race just kind of fell into my head.))

"And a little bit scary too, you had to be tough to make it." she smirked.
((Ooooh tell meeee and is Rae involved?))

"I was tough! Ish. Well, I was really good at talking my way out of things. And you were feared throughout the borough," he said with a smirk.
((I'll PM you! And she could be if you wanted her to. ^_^ It's pretty loose right now.))

"Cause everyone thought I was crazy" she said with a laugh. "And after I was with Spot that added a whole nother level."

"It definitely had its benefits, being the queen of Brooklyn," he teased. "I bet if you went back there, they'd bow and scatter rose petals at your feet." They were approaching the apartment building, and he tried to put the Brooklyn newsies out of his mind. That part of his life was long over, after all. "Just let me know if you're gonna dive right into that book, and I'll head home."

"No, come up. You can have some wine or coffee or something and we'll chat." She bit her lip and then sighed, "I'm home alone...a lot."

"I bet you'll miss those days when the baby comes," he said, following her inside and up the stairs. "I can see why you miss the lodging house, though. Never a moment alone."

"Yeah...sometimes when I'm alone I just end up thinking about things and then I get all sad and shit." She opened the door to the apartment.
"I might get a cat."

Race chuckled. "There's this kid at Duane Street who's got a different one following him around every day. I'm sure he'd give you one." He went inside and looked around. "This place is frighteningly clean. Is that what you do with all that time alone? 'Cause now I'm getting worried."
