Race had a suspicion about Sapphy lately. He would have just asked her about it, but she seemed determined to act like things were okay, so today, he skipped the tracks after he finished selling. Instead, he came straight home and went up to the girls' bunkroom, knocking on the door. No one was ever in the bunkroom at this time of day unless they had some serious sleep to catch up on--but he had a feeling Sapphy was in there, and that she wasn't even sleeping.

Sapphy's eyes were closed but her mind was fully awake. She was curled into her pillow when she heard the knock and decided to ignore it.

No answer. That could be a good thing or a really bad thing. Race cracked the door and poked his head in, hoping he'd find an empty bedroom, that she was out selling extra papes or frolicking with Copper or something. "Sapphy? You in here?"

"Race?" her eyes popped open and the facade instantly washed over her. She slowly sat up, smiling dazzlingly. "Heyyyy... Youuuu."

"Hey." He smiled back, in a way that suggested deep concern more than happiness, and came over to sit on the bed next to her. "Whatcha doing up here, Sapph?"

"Solving world hunger," she grinned, turning to lay on her back. She was dirty, disgusting, unwashed and she knew it.

"And how's that going for you?" he asked, taking her hand. "Shaye, you've been tired and kinda...out of it for more'n a week now. And I feel like I ain't been around much..." Because of Raven and the baby, of course. Much as he loved them both, neglecting Sapphy in favor of them gave him a special kind of guilt. "Anything you wanna talk about?"

"We should talk about taking a shower together," she smile, lacing their fingers more tightly together. Yeah, she was stooping low with her distracting tactics.

"That should definitely be one'a the scheduled topics of discussion," Race said, his throat going dry at the thought--"but first, why don't we talk about why you're just lying in here and looking like you ain't done nothing else for days?"

Sapphy smiled at Race a little sadly. She had a sneaking suspicion this was going to turn into their first fight. She rubbed her fingers over the back of his hand and up his arm, drawing invisible patterns on his skin.
"No thank you."

He crossed his arms over his chest so she had nothing to touch. "You 'member the promise you made when we got together?"

"Yes, and I would tell you." This wasn't anything worthwhile to worry Race about. She wasn't THAT in over her head...........

"Does that mean you were just about to shower and go out and mingle with people and have a good time? A real good time, without the fake smiles? Look, if you say things ain't that bad, I'll believe you, but you can't tell me there's nothing going on with you."

"What's inside my head needs to stay inside my head, Race," she muttered, sitting up. She sat on the opposite side of the bunk from Race, back to him.

"Why?" he asked softly. "You think I won't understand?"
