He slid off the barstool, feeling sorry for himself. Why were the girls around here all so difficult?? He took her hand, though, giving it a squeeze and sending her a weak smile, a little embarrassed.

Once they were outside, Rose stopped suddenly. She inhaled sharply as the cold night air bit at her skin. "So," she started, her breath coming out as a fine mist in front of her. "Where do you live? You better not be from Brooklyn or something."

He laughed at that, slipping his arm around her waist and tugging her against him, sharing his body heat. "Nah, not Brooklyn. I'm too nice of a guy for Brooklyn. I live in the lodging house up on Duane Street."

As much as she didn't want to, Rose cuddled into his side. He was just so warm.
"The lodging house? How'd you end up there? How'd you end up in New York, actually?"

He let his thumb rub her hip just a little as they walked. "Well, I, uh...my cousins had this illegal still. They got caught. My folks worried I'd get arrested for helpin' 'em, so they gave me some money and sent me away. I traveled around a while, but ended up here a few weeks ago." He glanced down at her. "I like it here."

The story sounded like one from one of those weird series novels, like the Western Jim ones.
"Oh, do you?" Rose looked up at him, one eyebrow raised. "Met a lot of girls, then?"

He shrugged. "A couple. None of 'em seemed interested, though." He looked down at her. "Still not sure you are, either, Sugar..."

Rose bit her lip as she thought. "Interested? ...I don't know yet. Too soon to tell. But intrigued? Yeah, maybe."

He nodded, thoughtful a minute. "Intrigued is good. I can deal with intrigued. It's better than nothing." He smiled a little, looking down at her. "So, am I walkin' ya home?"

"Actually, I think I ended up walking you home..." Rose declared as they passed the sign for Duane Street. "Just as well. If you knew where I lived, you'd probably come stalk me or something."

He hadn't even noticed where they were headed, had only been thinking about the way her hair smelled like vanilla and whiskey and how he wanted to kiss her again. He blinked as he saw the lodging house up ahead. "Oh. Well, it's late. I ain't gonna let ya walk home alone in the middle of the night, Rosie."

"But then that would defeat the purpose of me walking you home," she teased, scoffing. When she saw his serious face, "Okay, I only live two blocks away. If something happens to me, I'll scream. At the top of my lungs, I promise."

"Come on, Rosie, that doesn't exactly make me feel better." He stopped, turning to face her, hand going to her hair.

"I'll run, then. I'm very fast." She nodded vigorously, a smirk playing at her lips.

He smirked at her, thumb trailing down her cheek, then tracing over her lips. "Rosie, you are somethin' else, ya know it?"
