Maggie was a Good Girl. She'd always been a Good Girl. She'd minded her manners, done well in school, and hadn't done anything too terrible, aside from getting tipsy on holy wine.
So the fact that she and Sebastian were standing in Central Park on a fall evening, about to strip down and take a swim in order to get themelves arrested and thrown into the Refuge put her a little on edge. To say the very least.

Goblin stood beside Maggie and surveyed the pond. It was probably freezing, but he'd always been rather adventurous. And if he'd needed further proof that Maggie was the right girl for him, here it was: this plan was going to land them both in the Refuge, and yet he was actually rather excited about it.
As long as he completely avoided thinking about what came after. Then his stomach twisted in on itself and the whole world started tilting around him--so he worked really, really hard to avoid those thoughts. "Just to be clear," he said, "we're grabbing our clothes the second we hear the whistle. I am not getting arrested stark naked." And then he grinned, took off his hat, and shrugged off his shirt, hanging it on a bush.

She shivered, more from sheer nerves than anything else, but she stepped out of her shoes and slacks, folding them neatly. She shifted on her feet, working on the buttons of her shirt.
"So, uh...exactly how naked do I have to get..?"

"I think skivvies should be all right," he reassured her with a slight smirk. "Just as long as we're appropriately scandalous. Also, it won't hurt if we start yelling and laughing once we're in there--disrupting the peace, you know?" He stepped out of his pants and tossed them on top of the shirt, hoping the families in Central Park were not feeling tolerant and open-minded today.

She sighed, reminding herself this was her idea in the first place, then slipped of her shirt, setting it on her pants. "Ok. Now kiss me before I freak out and change my mind." She might have already been freaking out.

He took a deep breath and pulled her close, kissing her deeply while trying not to think about the fact that it might be the last time--for a good long while, at least. Romance in the Refuge was a dangerous distraction, as he'd learned all too well the first time. This plan was basically the culmination of every plan he'd made over the past year, the one he'd been working toward all this time--and yet he couldn't remember a time when he'd felt less prepared or less sure that he was making the right move.

She kissed him back, a little desperately. She didn't break the kiss as she started walking backwards, tugging him with her until the hit the water. She gasped against his mouth -- it was freezing.

The cold came as a shock even though he'd been expecting it, but he just tightened his hold on Script, kissing her until he had to stop for breath. Then he grinned and ducked underwater, coming up on the other side and splashing her. Hey, it was probably the last chance they'd get to have fun for quite a while, and he could already hear the shocked exclamations of various ladies and gentlemen passing by; someone would probably go for the bulls any moment.

She yelped as he splashed her with the water, teeth chattering. "Oh, that does it!" She lunged at him, landing on his back, arms wrapping around his shoulders as she pulled him under water with her.

He came up sputtering and laughing, and starting to shiver. Why exactly had they settled on a plan that involved being freezing and practically naked? Ah well, too late now. He could hear shouts in the distance. He pounced, pulled Script under again, and kissed her underwater. Something to check off their bucket lists.

She held him tightly, kissing him back. When they came up fr air, she was clinging to him as she met his eyes. "Sebastian, no matter what happens...just know that I'm here and I lo--" She stopped, head turning as a couple policeman rounded the bend. She looked back at him, kissed him again a little desperately, then took off back to shore and clothes.

He barely had a split second to think about what she'd almost said--and feel like the most horrible person in the universe--before the inevitable whistle pierced the air. He sighed, sprang out of the pond, and threw his clothes back on as the two cops pounded toward them, yelling at them to freeze. Goblin rolled his eyes and put his hands up. You'd think it was armed robbery or something.

She'd only managed to get her shirt half buttoned when she was forced to put her hands up, biting her lip nervously, glancing over at Goblin and looking like she might cry.

Goblin gave Script one reassuring look and then pretty much tried to forget she was there. And to tune out the cops, one of whom was yelling about standards of decency, the other about how he would push to make sure they got at least a month in the Refuge for this. Before he knew it, they were both handcuffed and led away, soaking wet and bedraggled, and Goblin had retreated inside himself, thinking of nothing but the future--a quick joke of a trial, and then the real trial, the final ordeal he'd been preparing for all this time.
He only hoped it would go the way he'd planned. But then again, nothing ever did.

The trial went exactly as they thought it would. Goblin was sentenced to a month, Script to three weeks, mostly because she cried in the box and her father had pleaded for leniency. Needless to say, her father was furious with her, shooting death glares at Goblin the entire time, then nearly breaking down as he blamed it on her mother's death. Maggie couldn't even begin to think of how she'd explain this to her father, or make it up to him.
When the were finally deposited in the Refuge, she cried all over again when they were separated into their respective wings.
