She mumbled against his chest. "I told Riddle and Gypsy details. She made me and I didn't fight." She tilted her face up at him. "I think they're part of it, Sebastian. I think they're in on it somehow."

He took a shaky breath and tried to process that. "It's good you didn't fight. You don't want to fight them, Mag. But how can they be in on it? They're prisoners, they don't want to be here any more than the rest of us." He was genuinely baffled. So much for being ahead of the game.

She shook her head. "I don't know, but you should have seen them. There was something in her eyes, Sebastian..." she bit her lip. "And Gypsy...she said you and her..."

His eyes narrowed. "Yeah, I'm sure she did. She came over here to try and figure out what I was up to, and I basically told her to go to hell. I should've known she'd go after you." He squeezed her hand. "Nothing happened, but she wanted it to. Just so she could throw it in your face, I'm guessing. That girl's like poison, Maggie. She's worse than Riddle." He was wishing he'd given her twice as many bodyguards.

She bit her lip, pulling away from him and meeting his eyes. "I...they said...the other girls, too...they said you manipulate people...that I'm a pawn in some game..."

His heart almost skipped a beat when she said that, but he kept his cool. He'd known all along that this would happen--that the kids in the Refuge would talk, and it would be his word against theirs. "Maybe that's how they see it," he said, looking her in the eye. "But it's not a game, you're not a pawn, and I never lied to you, Maggie. Ever." He had just failed to tell her things. Lots of things.

She looked up at him, searching his eyes. She desperately wanted to believe him. Something Riddle had said popped into her head. "Show me your back, Sebastian..." her voice was quiet, but it wasn't a question.

He found himself backing against the wall before she even finished the sentence. "Uh, Maggie, you've seen me naked multiple times..."

She nearly blushed, but swallowed and set her jaw. "I've never seen your back. Sebastian. Show it to me." She met his eyes. He was hiding something from her. It occured to her that he was, in fact, always hiding something from her. Outloud she said, "You can lie by ommission, too, you know..."

"But you knew there were things I wasn't telling you. You knew that from the start," he pointed out, knowing full well that this was his own fault. Script might be the sweetest, most trusting person he'd ever met, but she wasn't stupid; even she was going to want answers sooner or later. He sighed, turned around, and lifted up his shirt, his face even more expressionless than usual. Underneath was a giant labyrinth of scars--he remembered trying to count them in the mirror at the apartment he and Wraith had crashed in for a while after he first got out.

Her face paled as her eyes fell upon the mass of scars across his back. For a terrifying moment, she thought she might pass out. She swallowed with some difficulty, then took a few steps forward, fingers reaching out to touch his back. Her voice was barely above a whisper. "Oh, Sebastian...why didn't you tell me..."

"I told you it was bad," he reminded her, tugging his shirt down and leaning against the wall again. "Any other questions?"

His tone made her wince and she froze, staring at him. "I...I just want...you should tell..." She closed her mouth when her lip started to quiver. She wouldn't cry. Not now. She wouldn't make any more of a scene than she'd already done today. "No. No more questions." That was a lie. She had a million questions. She just knew he'd never tell her and only resent her for asking. She took two steps backwards, away from him.

Well, now he felt awful. And probably well-deserved. Anyone who made his girlfriend cry this much was clearly a terrible person. "I'm sorry, Mag. I didn't mean to...you've got every right to ask questions." He hesitated. "Look, I'm sure you've met the trio by now." His mouth quirked at the thought of the only three girls in the Refuge he still trusted. "Ask them for the whole story of what happened with me and Riddle. Tell them I said it's fine, I just...don't wanna re-live it all. But you deserve to know."

She watched him a minute, something gnawing at the back of her mind, but she couldn't place it, so she ignored it instead. She nodded slowly. "I'll ask them." She bit her lip, lifting her eyes to his. "Sebastian, I've been trying to tell you this for days, and now there's nothing to stop me." She took a breath, and a step forward. "I love you, Sebastian." He dropped her eyes to the floor. "I just thought you should know..."
