Nate descended the stairs from the boys' bunkroom down into the lobby, his eyes scanning the room for the girl he was supposed to meet. He stopped at the bottom of the stairs and leaned gently against the banister, his hands shoved casually in his pants pockets as he tried to keep himself calm.
Was it obvious that he hadn't been on a proper date in years? Was he overdressed? Underdressed? To hell if he knew anymore.
He glanced up at the close that hung in the center of the room 6:58. "Any minute now..." he whispered to himself as his stomach twisted itself into knots.

"Racetrack do not give him any booze or I will never leave you alone with him again!" Raven yelled as she made her way out of the infirmary. She blew her hair out of her face and finished tucking in her shirt. Raven took a deep breath. This was such a bad idea. Bad BAD idea.
She hurried down the stairs and then paused when she saw Nate waiting there. "Hey," she said and smiled.

Nate looked up at Raven and smiled at her before politely extending his hand to her. "Hi there," he said kindly, the knots in his stomach now officially twisting themselves into some kind of balloon animal. "I'm Nate..."
Why am I so nervous? he thought to himself as he took a careful step back from the base of the staircase to give Raven some space. It's just a date. ONE date. ONE.

"Rae," She said with a smile and then shook his hand. Raven chewed on her bottom lip. How was she going to make it through this night? This was a bad idea, she was going to kill Tristan.
"So, should we get going?" She asked him.

"That might be a good idea, yeah," Nate agreed, letting go of Rae's hand. He looked over at her as he he walked across the lobby and smirked. "I know you've got more important things to worry about than goin' out on a date with some strange guy you don't even know."
He laughed at his comment just a little bit, but couldn't help but feel that maybe he shouldn't have said it at all. Approaching the front door, her cleared out his throat and held it open for her. "So, umm, are you hungry, Rae?"

"I'm starving actually," She said. She walked out the front door. Well, he seemed nice. She waited for him to join her outside. Now she felt bad that he thought this was a chore for her.
"We're gonna have fun, so stop worrying. Besides, Racetrack knows better than to mess with my baby." She looped her arm in his.

"Okay, okay, just checking," Nate replied with a quick nod. Once he felt her arm loop into his, he felt oddly relaxed. Maybe this wasn't going as terribly as he thought...
"So,I guess we're going to Tibby's then," Nate joked, but with a completely serious look on his face. "That's where all the dates happen, right?"
He looked over at her and, before he could even study her face for a reaction, he began to smirk. "Actually, if you don't mind, there's this Italian place a couple blocks up that I used to go to."

"If you're talking about Mama's I'm definitely in. Sofia will be shocked if I eat there with another man, she thinks me and Racetrack are dating." She said with a huge smile. She was starting to feel more relaxed as well, all the pressure she had put on herself melted away.
"She thinks Sean's his baby."

"How'd you know I was talking about Mama's?" Nate asked with a laugh, his eyes widening. "I used to go there all the time a few years ago, but I can't remember the last time I went!" Well, that was actually a lie. He could most definitely remember the last time he occupied a table at Mama's, but he knew there were just some things you don't talk about with girls --- and places you went with a girlfriend was one of them.
"Your baby's name is Sean?" He asked, smirking. "You don't look Irish to me, Miss Rae. But, still, that's a nice name. I like it."

"Any self respectable Italian knows about Mama's. They have the best red sauce. It's better than my own and I'm not proud to admit that." She said pointing at him.
"His father's Irish," Raven said and shrugged, "If I'da known that son of a bitch was gonna run off on me I woulda named him Gino."

"I'm sorry," Nate said with a frown. He reached across with his free hand and lightly patted the back of her hand before pulling his hand away again. "I'm gonna keep my thoughts on the matter to myself, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't respect what you're doin' for yourself. It takes a strong person to do that."
He rounded the corner, his smile returning once Mama's came to view. "Still just as I remembered it."

"The place never changes. If it did I think I'd actually be upset." She smiled up at him, "and thanks by the way. It really hasn't been easy, but I'm okay. I usually am."

"Well, I know this probably doesn't mean a lot since we really just met and all of that, but I think it's admirable," he said sweetly before opening the door to the restaurant. "After you."

She stepped inside and then walked to her usual table, the one that she normally shared with Racetrack. She sat down and waited for Nate to sit across from her.
"Well what am I supposed to do with him? I can't give my son away. He's mine. I love him. I love him more than anything in the world."

Nate followed her inside and sat down across from her at the table. He could see the table he used to share with April over Rae's shoulder. Nope, this place didn't change one bit. "Well, that's because you've obviously got more sense than some other girls," Nate reasoned. "Some girls would panic and not know what to do, you know?"
He shrugged and opened his menu, briefly glancing at it before folding it closed again. "I'm putting a damper on this whole conversation, aren't I?" He asked, a nervous chuckle in his voice.
