"He's got other ones to take care of, don't worry," replied Risk, standing up and stuffing his hands in his pockets. He looked at her awkwardly and back down at his feet. "So... we're talking now?"

She swallowed. "We can." Awkward silence. "I mean...I'm sorry if...that I...y'know." Oh, yeah. This was helping matters.

Risk shrugged. "You didn't have to say yes." He just thought she was going to. Apparently, he was wrong.

"Yeah, I realize that." She fidgeted uncomfortably. "I mean...it'd all end badly. These things always do." The very idea of dating filled her with dread. It was almost like she'd done it all before in some other life, and the tragic consequences were laid out before her eyes. She rubbed her wrists absently. ((...that was a totally self-indulgent MLH reference. ))

((Oh, MLH <3)) Risk frowned, raising an eyebrow at her. "How do you know that? That these things'll always end badly?"

"'Cause everything ends badly for me?" Oh, and because of her parents, and Ada, and Michael and Irish, but that would just make her look like one of those losers who were all traumatized by their families and their dark pasts. She was just sensible, damn it. "And also...never mind."

"Also, what?" he asked curiously. "Beth, you don't have to tell me how everything ends badly -- everyone in this house has their story. It's not just you. It doesn't always have to end badly." He glanced at her awkwardly. Dammit, he hated how he was starting to sound like Ershey.

"I...don't really know why you asked," she muttered, staring at the floor. She didn't want him to think that it mattered why he'd asked, that there was any chance of her saying yes regardless. But it did matter. "We were arguing and you just kinda yelled it at me."

"I didn't ask it just to ask it, Beth," he replied, finally looking at her. "I asked 'cause I wanted to go on a date with you... and I thought it'd be fun." And I like you.

"Well, there's other kinds of fun," she said firmly. "Like the kind friends have. And that's all I want. All right?"
She'd always been a bloody good actress. Her whole everyday personality was an act. It would serve her well in their upcoming assignment, and it served her well right now, as she claimed to have no romantic feelings for someone she wanted to touch so badly it was becoming an obsession.

"Yeah, all right," repeated Risk, nodding. He refused to push it any further. He was sure there was something there. Why did Macbeth confide in him other than Ershey? Maybe he was just thinking things. He was feeling things that weren't really happening.
"Stupid," he muttered under his breath as he turned to walk away.

Beth heard him and winced. She might piss people off on a daily basis, but she couldn't stand hurting people, really hurting them, not when they meant something to her.
"Besides," she said lightly as he turned away, "I'm holding out, 'member? So you never really had a chance."
She doubted he could have forgotten her answer to his most embarrassing question. I'm holding out for someone who's completely in love with me. It was true enough, but it was also a kind of joke. Maybe Risk had some stupid passing crush, but the chances of him, of anyone, ever feeling that way about her were...well, nonexistent.

"Yeah, well, maybe you just gotta try," he replied loud enough for her to hear as he continued to walk up the stairs.
He had feelings for Macbeth. He wasn't about to admit it out loud but it was there. He'd be there for her to take care of Jo, to make sure Eastman wasn't going to put her in danger and to make her happy when she was down. But if she didn't even recognize that, maybe it wasn't worth it.
((Awwwwwww, these two!!!))
