[Kathryn]

She almost sighed; she was getting annoyed with all of this because none of it seemed like it would lead o finding Leo. But she went along anyways.

[Leo]

Once they were back in the carriage, Alex turned to Kathryn. "I can go find where this William lives on my own. I do not want to keep dragging you along."
He began directing the carriage back to town.

[Kathryn]

She was about to insist on staying with him, but she knew she wouldn't be able to contribute to anything... "Just come get me as soon as you find something out, okay? Swear to me." Her tone made it obvious that, if he didn't obey, he could possibly die. She knew people. Or, her father did.

[Leo]

Alexander nodded, and pulled her carriage in front of her house.

"I will work day and night to find him. He's alive, I know he is."

[Kathryn]

Kathryn spent what seemed like the next 10 million hours pacing around her house, not eating or sleeping, and avoiding any and all contact with her parents. Oh, where was Alexander?

[Leo]

By the next evening, Alexander wasn't nearly as polite about getting Kathryn's attention. He stormed in through the servant's door, and knocked on Kathryn's bedroom door himself, loudly.

"Ms Van Wyck! Kathryn!"

[Kathryn]

She could tell it was Alexander; he must have news about Leo. Even though her maid was still in the process of undoing her hair, she yelled for him to enter.

[Leo]

Alexander flung open the door. "You must come! hurry!"

[Kathryn]

Kathryn rushed to the door, ignoring her maid's protests. "What's happened? Did you find him?!"

[Leo]

Alexander didn't respond and instead opened up the carriage door, where Leo was laying practically unconscious. He managed a breath though when he saw her.

"Kathryn."

Alexander turned to Kathryn. "I need to take him home. He has an infected leg wound, he can't walk. Are you coming?"

[Kathryn]

"Of course I'm coming," Kathryn said, breathless. She got in the carriage, setting Leo's head on her lap. "It's okay, I'm here. You'll be okay."

[Leo]

Alexander didn't even bother to explain more, he just urged the horse forward and sped back to their isolated house in the woods.

Leo looked up at her. "I'm sorry."

[Kathryn]

"It doesn't matter," she said softly, trying her hardest not to cry. "Just be still. Don't talk."

[Leo]

"He's lost a lot of blood," Alex explained, and opened the carriage door. They were in the barn now, and an operating table was in front of them.

"help me get him on the table." Alex took a hold of Leo's torso, dragging him up. Leo moaned in pain.

[Kathryn]

Kathryn must have been experiencing an adrenaline rush because she barely noticed how heavy Leo was. Once he was on the table, she went up by his head, running her fingers gently through his hair. She tried to soothe him while Alexander cut off his pant leg.
