She blinked at him. "I'm not breaking your heart, Dave!" She wanted to pour a gallon of ice water on him and wake him the fuck up. "You've just stopped thinking clearly." She shook her head, hardly able to look at him.
"I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"

He grit his teeth, exhaling sharply. "You know what. Fine. Have it your way." He moved past her, storming to the boys bunkroom, and away from her.

((**zooooooooooooom**))
Zippy woke up earlier than usual and headed to the bookstore. She couldn't talk to David, and, frankly, was sort of avoiding him.
So he had turned down Dartmouth because of her. Which she could have ultimately accepted because he really wasn't ready to leave home and go to college. He was so immature!
But he also was thinking wild things about love, living together, and marriage. Zippy was beginning to believe he was less caught up in her and more just...lost. Confused. Crazy.
She assumed as the morning went on David had ended up at school, to her relief. She didn't know what to do. She had never had this issue before- usually she was the crazy one.

David had not, as Zippy assumed, gone to school. Instead, he'd made friends with Moonshine, who was more than willing to provide him with cheap booze and teach him how to drink properly without making a mess of himself.
By the time evening rolled around, David had been drinking and napping, napping and drinking on and off all day, and feeling otherwise sorry for himself because he loved a girl who A)didn't love him back, not really; and B)thought he was crazy for loving her, so he clearly must be mistaken. Or something.

((oh, god))
After a long day of working, Zippy was not only exhausted, but completely at loss for what to do with David. She had to break it off with him- he was just too nuts. The thought really upset her, but she didn't think she had much of a choice. He had lost all touch of reality, and claimed it was love. She wasn't ready for a guy to just start talkng marriage and living together after only a few months. It wasn't fair. She had gone from one extreme to another.
When she reached the lodging house, Zippy tiredly walked up the stairs, and passed the boys bunkroom, thinking that maybe she could run into Jack. Maybe he could talk to Dave, knock some sense into him before Zippy had to break it off. Maybe Jack could change things. Maybe JACK was the answer...Instead, she walked into the bunkroom and found David passed out on a nearby bunk.
Drunk?! AGAIN?! Furious now, Zippy sat on the edge of his bed, and checked for a pulse.

Oh, David was alive, all right. And when he felt her bend over him, he reached out and pulled her down onto the bunk with him, snuggling against her, eyes still closed.

Zippy wasn't about to protest. She couldn't start a fight with drunk!David, or break it off with him when he was like this.
She laid there with him for a few minutes, trying to think of the right thing to say. But nothing she thought of sounded right, he would get upset at practically anything.

He spooned her from behind, wrapping his arms around her. He pressed a kiss to the back of her neck, then her shoulder. "I missed you."

"What are you doing, Dave?" Zippy asked softly, thankful she didnt have to look at him. "You reek of booze."

He pouted, his eyes still closed as he nuzzled the back of her neck. He wasn't as drunk as the other night, but he'd definitely had his fair share through out the day.
"You made me sad."

"You made me sad, too," Zippy replied, sighing. She was so tired. Working was hard.

"I don't wanna make you sad, Zip. But I suck at making you happy." He pulled her tighter against him, glad that the bunkroom was empty, but he wouldn't have cared it if wasn't.

"You try too hard," Zippy pointed out. For someone so smart, she really wanted to tell him how dumb he was.

He sighed. "I'm no good at this, Zippy. I've never dated a girl before. And then when I do, the universe has to drop the most perfect, wonderful girl in the world onto my lap. It's like I don't even get a practice run."

She chuckled, and sat up, taking his hand and kissing it. "I'll always be here for you, David."
