Trixie stayed awake a long time after that, watching over him, brushing her fingers through his hair lightly. When she couldn't keep her eyes open any longer, she snuggled down beside him, kissing his cheek and whispering in his ear, "I love you, Eli."

She fell asleep holding him.

Luke awoke Eli the next morning, urging him out of bed. Eli got up, his head still hurting, but eating the rest of Zippy's sandwich helped. Luke gave him a look, wanting to tell him to take the day off but not knowing how. Because he knew Eli would probably lose his job if he didn't go.

Eli sat on the side of his bed, kissing Trixie on her forehead to say goodbye.
