"I work over at Tibby's sometimes, I can sneak you in a slice of pie for free... you can save your money for next time," said Ershey, hoping she wouldn't say no.

Birdie hesitated, slowly putting her violin up into its case and clicking the latches shut. "Are you sure that would be all right? I do like pie."

Ershey shrugged, smiling. "I know the people that work in the kitchen, don't worry about it. They won't miss one slice of pie."

Birdie grinned. "Thanks, that would be great." She got up from the bench and tucked her case under her arm.

"Yeah, no problem," she smiled as she led the way to Tibby's. "You new around here? I don't think I've seen you around the Park before..."

She followed along behind Ershey, shifting her shoulders a little awkwardly. "I used to live in Queens, with my parents. I've only been in Manhattan for a few months now." She gave a little smile. "Manhattan pays better for playing in the park."

"I'm sure we're nicer than in Queens too," she chuckled softly. "You always been playing the violin? You're really good, y'know."

"My father played, and much better than I ever have." Birdie shrugged. "But thanks." She pushed a piece of hair out of her eyes and smiled over at Ershey. "So you work at Tibby's? And you're a newsie, too?"

"Yeah," nodded Ershey. "Gotta do what you have to do to have money to pay for food."

She bobbed her head in agreement. "I know what you mean. Do you like selling papers?"

"It's not so bad, I get tired of it sometimes... I guess that's why I started working at Tibby's," she answered, shrugging.

"You must meet some interesting people working there," Birdie said with a smile.

"Oh yeah," laughed Ershey as Tibby's came into view. She led her towards the back entrance, where most of the employees went through. "From annoying families to drunks to homeless people, we get everything."
She opened the door, showing the kitchen and immediately smelling food. "C'mon," we'll just grab a slice of pie and sit somewhere. Y'know, pretend that we bought it."

Birdie breathed in deeply, smiling at the aroma. "Mm, it smells delicious in here," she murmured as she trailed Ershey through the kitchen.
"But working here, surely you don't get bored. Playing in the park can be a little dull." Birdie watched the bustle of the room, wide-eyed, then turned back to Ershey. "Honestly, I think you're the first person to stop and talk to me."

"Maybe they just didn't want to break your concentration," smiled Ershey as she waved at the workers before reaching over for a plate and searching for pie.
