"They're my friends when I'm fucked up. They don't know anything about me, they don't really give a shit about me." He admitted and raked his hands through his hair.

Erin cleared her throat a little awkwardly. She wasn't sure what to say. "maybe they want to, you just...you put up this wall, Tristan. Even with your own kid."

"He didn't need someone like me in his life," he said, "I had no business being a father."
Tristan looked over at her, "why have you stuck around so long?"

Erin managed a small, genuine smile. "you were my first big client. It was the hardest thing, dealing with you." she chuckled. "But I got through it, and you are an even bigger deal then you were then. I don't want anyone else to take over. I guess I consider your success...partially mine. If you don't mind me saying so."

"nah I don't," he said with a smile. He cleared his throat as he studied her, he never realized how pretty she was before.

She cleared her throat. They didn't usually get this...personal. "Besides. I've had to fire most of my other clients to take care of all your shit. If I left now, I'd be back on the bottom."

He burst out laughing, "you ain't getting fired," he said and shook his head.
His head turned to the door when his therapist came in with a very official looking woman, they were both wearing frowns.
"Mr. Shamien do you have a minute?" the official looking woman said.
"Uh yeah..."
"Alone."
"She stays."

"No, no, I can go...." Erin said, glancing at Tristan. "Hide the chocolate" she muttered with a smile, gathering her purse.

"No," he said and looked at Erin, really not wanting her to go. He opened a candy bar and bit into it.
"There's been an accident," the woman said. "I'm afraid that Nancy Santorum was killed." she said, clasping her briefcase in front of her.
Tristan's eyes widened and he sunk down into the chair.
"I know this is a shock..."

Erin couldn't help it. She gasped. "Oh my god-" She brought her hand up to her mouth. She glanced at Tristan, then at the woman.
"Was it the damn paparazzi? I swear, Tristan, if this is a Princess Diana accident they will PAY...." She took out her phone, scrolling to Tristan's lawyer.

"We have a larger problem here. Her son Michael has you listed as next of kin and in her will she named you as his guardian."
Tristan glanced at her, he swallowed the chocolate. "what happens if I don't take him?"
"he belongs to the state."
"Erin, help me pack." he said immediately.

"Wait, you are LEAVING? Tristan. No. This isn't what you need. Remember, 6 months break? Taking time to write?" She grabbed his arm. "You can't take a 5 year old into your house if you aren't even sober!"
She turned to the woman. "Doesn't the kid have a grandparent, an aunt or an uncle...? someone to take him until Tristan is ready?"

"Doc I want to set up an in home therapy program, I dont give a fuck how much it costs." he said then turned to Erin. He rested his hands on her shoulders.
"he's never needed me for anything, never asked for anything. She left him to me for a reason."

"This isn't some Adam Sandler movie, Tristan!" Erin tried to keep her temper. They got along best when they were bossing each other around anyway. "You have no idea how hard it is to take care of a kid! He barely knows you, he just lost his mom, you are gonna go through withdrawal symptoms..." It was a disaster in the making.
"I know you feel alone, Tristan. But this isn't the right fix. This isn't the right way to do it."

"Exactly, I need help and you're gonna do it," he said and then turned to face the other two.
"where is he?"
"At the police station."
"ill be there by the end of the day."
