"So Natalie, have you been applying to colleges?" Charlie asked. "Eli is taking a year off, but he still applied."

The question caught her off guard. "I--no. I...haven't decided yet." How could she explain that while everyone else had been applying for colleges, she was being told she was dying.

David raised a brow. "So? She still needs to apply like normal people."
Natalie looked down at her plate, poking at her kugel with her fork. "I--I hadn't really planned that far ahead..."

Natalie stood up. "Excuse me. I--I need to use the bathroom." She hurried out of the room.
David looked at Eli curiously, then glanced at Erin.

Erin frowned. "Why are you so upset? This is how we are..."
Charlie sighed. "I didn't mean anything by it...Just making conversation."
Eli went to the bathroom, knocking on the door. "Natalie, come back. Please."

She sighed. "I just wasn't expecting them to ask me that. I have a whole list of automatic answers to things people ask me, but hardly anyone ever brings up college. They know a girl like me only goes for her 'Mrs. Degree,' anyway."
