"No kiddin'." Pie let out a laugh. Murphy's law was pretty much the motto of the lodging house -- if anything could go wrong, it did go wrong.

"So, everything's good on your end? Family's doing fine?" asked Specs curiously, wondering if there was more to the story other than Pie's mother wanting him around.

Pie shrugged as he went over to one of the chairs and sat down in it. "Fine enough, I guess. Spent all month hearin' about how I should get married, how my dad needs somebody to help out in the shop." He made a face and folded his arms. "Y'know, the usual family visit."

Specs nodded, quite jealous that he was able to visit his family without any worries. "You ready to sell papers now that you're back in Manhattan?" he smirked, sitting back down on the couch.

Pie smirked. "I sold a few earlier today, while somebody was in here asleep on the couch." He shook his head in mock-disappointment.

"Hey!" muttered Specs, shooting him a look. "I was selling the whole time yesterday night until this morning! I had to get some sleep to survive!"

Pie quirked an eyebrow up. "Why so much, kid?" He smirked out of the corner of his mouth and crossed his arms over his chest. "You aren't so serious about this girl that you're lookin' to buy her a ring, are you?"

Specs eyes widened, playfully punching his friend on the shoulder. "No, that's not it! And you better shut your mouth, you know how talk gets around here!" he said, hoping that no one was around. "I gotta send money back home... that's all."

Pie laughed and ducked the punch, putting his hands up. "I'm kiddin'!" He turned serious again. "Everything okay back home?"

"I'm the oldest," answered Specs, shrugging. "And the only one away from home... and even though that sounds great, I still gotta help out, y'know? Let's just say they expect a bit too much sometimes."

Pie nodded slowly, remembering how similar their situations really were -- although, his family was only a couple of miles away. "I know what you mean, kid."

"And that's why I was sleeping on the couch," chuckled Specs, finally easing up.

"You know, you do pay for a bunk upstairs," he said with a teasing grin. "It's probably a little more comfortable than that miserable excuse for a couch."

"It was the first thing I saw, alright?" chuckled Specs, shaking his head at his friend. "You plan on meeting up with the rest of the boys anytime soon?"

"We oughta go out to Irving, all the old gang!" Pie said. "I've hardly seen anybody since I got back."
