Lillian let out a soft sigh, comforting Bea even more and telling her it was all going to be all right. "It's not like Michael's never acted like this before. Why are you so upset?"
Michael grumbled, standing up and adjusting his waistcoat. "If you'll excuse me, I think I shall retire for the evening," he said, gritting his teeth.

Bea wiped at her eyes. "I don't know why I'm so upset! It's only that I like him so, and he dislikes me so, and it hurts!" she mumbled in a shaky voice.
"Michael," Nick said as he stood up as well. "Hold on, what on earth has gotten into the two of you? You were laughing and having a good time an hour ago!"

Lillian furrowed her brow deeply, looking a bit distressed but also confused. "Maybe...you should just go home. Drink some nice hot tea and get some rest."
Michael glared back at him. This was his way of telling Nick to leave it and mind his own business.

Bea nodded -- Lillian was right, she looked a mess now, and she didn't really feel like dancing anymore. "I will, Lillie. I'm sorry I got your shoulder all wet," she said as she wiped hopelessly at the damp spot on Lillian's dress.
Nick widened his eyes at Michael's expression and put his hands up in defeat. "Fine, fine. I'm only trying to help, Michael."

"Don't worry about it. It's my least favorite gown, anyway," she assured her, leading her the back way through the garden out to the carriages.
Michael just narrowed his eyes slightly before heading out.

Bea walked with Lillian toward the carriages, feeling guilty now that she was calmer. "I can make it home, Lillie, you go back to the party and enjoy the evening."
Nick sighed and watched Michael go, not entirely sure what to make of his mood. But perhaps with him out of the way, and Bea hopefully calmer now, he could take up that dance with Lillian again.

Lillian saw Bea off in the carriage, waving at her and frowning a little. Then she turned around and nearly bumped into Michael. It took only a moment for her to get over her astonishment at running into someone before she frowned. "What is the matter with you?!?!"
Michael let out a groan. "Lillian, for the love of god! I'm leaving, just let me leave!"

Nick came up behind Michael and Lillian, frowning with his hands tucked in his pockets. "Let him go, Lillian. Clearly he isn't going to tell us what's going on." He frowned deeper at Michael.

Michael let out another groan, this one louder and more annoyed than before. Then he stormed off to fetch his horse, riding home in a semi-fury.
Lillian was practically speechless as she watched him leave. Then she turned slowly to Nick. "I've never seen him like that before..." she mused, her brows furrowed deeply.

"I think they've gone insane," Nick mumbled in answer. "The both of them." He glanced over his shoulder back toward the ballroom, which was glowing with candlelight and warmth.

Lillian giggled, though she felt like bursting out into laughter. "I think you're right," she agreed, shaking her head slowly. Then she followed his glance. "I suppose Winchester is looking for me..."

Nick looked over at her, frowning. "We missed the quadrille, I think," he said a bit uselessly. Maybe Michael had the right idea -- riding home and spending the rest of the evening sulking would be a little better than watching Winchester dancing with Lillian.

Lillian out a sigh, shrugging her shoulders. "Oh, well. I...actually prefer taking strolls and talking to dancing..." she told him, sounding a bit shy.

Nick curved his mouth into a half-smile and offered his arm. "We could take a walk for a while, then, before we go back in?" he offered. It wasn't entirely proper, of course, but surely no one would think anything of it. Their families had been friends for ages, after all.

She smiled shyly, resting her hand in the crook of his elbow as they began to walk back to the gardens. She secretly wished there would be no other couples there, but she wasn't sure if it was because she didn't want anyone to think the wrong thing about her and Nick or if it was because she wanted to be completely alone with him...
