Nick braced his arms against the rail beside her, following her gaze over the darkened gardens. "How is he ever not being difficult?" he asked under his breath. After a moment, he straightened and turned to put his back to the gardens, trying to keep his voice light. "He's making odd accusations, that's all."
Bea laughed again. "It's rather sweet, isn't it? Though if he manages to ask her to dance, it won't earn her any reading days."

She quirked a brow, glancing over at him briefly. "What kind of accusations? Are they about me?" She just knew Michael would talk about her and her interesting ways of gaining privacy from their parents.
"How would you like to make a friendly wager, Miss Beatrice?" he asked, smirking and waggling his eyebrows playfully down at her.

Nick looked back through the doors to the ballroom, folding his arms over his chest. "About us, actually." Honestly, he was a bit curious to know what Lillian would say about Michael's obviously incorrect suggestion.
"I'd love to," Bea answered with an impish smile. "What will I win?"

His words made Lillian start. "Us?" she asked, bewildered. "Whatever would Michael being accusing us of?"
Michael chuckled, shaking his head. "I would win a favor of some sort. And I will win this when Lillian accepts his request to dance."

"That I wanted to dance with you, and you wouldn't dance with me." Nick flicked his eyes at her with a tense frown. "Silly, isn't it?"
"You have a deal, Mr. Bennett," Bea said, and she stuck out her hand. "If Nick even manages to work up the courage to ask her, Lillie still wouldn't dance with him."

Lillian gulped, but managed to chuckle nervously. "Us, dancing together? That's -- that's preposterous!"
Michael shook her hand, smirking devilishly. "I guess we'll find out sooner or later."

Nick faltered slightly. "Yes, preposterous..." he repeated awkwardly, then gave a weak laugh.
"That we will," Bea said as she shook his hand. "I should think up my favor, since I am clearly going to win."

Lillian clamped her mouth shut, unwilling to say anything else at the moment.
"And I shall do the same, because I'm obviously going to win," Michael replied, smirking.

They stood in uneasy silence a moment, when Nick finally cleared his throat. "Although, we could show him how preposterous the idea is..." he said a little slowly, sneaking a glance at her out of the corner of his eye.
"We'll see," Bea grinned, crinkling her nose as she looked up at him. She always did enjoy Michael's company, even though he clearly thought she was a silly little girl.

Lillian glanced back at him, looking a bit less devilish than he. "You mean, we should dance together? To spite Michael?"
Michael saw Bea's dance card hanging on her wrist, and he swiftly stole it. "And who are you dancing with tonight, hm?"

"You don't think it would work? I do hate to see him looking so smug," Nick added.
Bea, her hand still looped through the ribbon, was forced to hold her wrist up so he could open her card. "Mrs. Smythe's nephew Cecil. I think he's claimed the mazurka."

"As do I...Besides, it's not like we'd really be dancing together. It'd be a front, just to see the look on Michael's face..."
Michael let out a short bark of laughter. "You won't be dancing for the rest of the night. He has two left feet, you know."

"Precisely," Nick agreed, a little too quickly. "Care to, then? I think a waltz is coming up next."
"I know, but I promised Mrs. Smythe that I would." Bea grimaced and looked down at her shoes. "My poor slippers will be ruined."

Lillian blinked, staring at him for a moment. Then a crooked smile came upon her lips. "It would be my pleasure," she replied with a small bow of her head.
"Ah, no worries. I'm sure Lillian will accompany you to purchase a new pair. Say, would you care to waltz?" He kept his tone casual, eyes still examining her dance card.

It took a good deal of effort to hold back a grin, but Nick bit the inside of his cheek and nodded slowly, offering his arm.
Bea widened her eyes, and then peered up at him with a suspicious frown. "You want to dance with me?"
