Nick bit back a smile -- she favored him! At least, she favored him more than that slimy Earl. "Yes, but won't this lose you some favor with your family? I thought they'd have set you free for a week for dancing with him."
Bea pursed her lips, feeling furious and wounded. She contemplated kicking him in the shin for a brief moment, then finally turned and stalked out of the room, biting on her trembling lip.

"Well, that may be the case, but I shall just have to deal with the consequences. Besides, I still may dance with the Earl yet. I can't dance with you all night. More than two will render us the talk of the society pages, you know," she pointed out.
Michael felt awful. In more ways than one. He'd felt a certain stirring in his stomach earlier when he'd been with Bea. And he was sure he didn't like it. But did he really have to send her away like that?

"When has that ever mattered?" Nick asked, frowning at the idea of Lillian running off to dance with the Earl the moment the quadrille ended. Why did that bother him so much, he wondered? Certainly Winchester was a cad, but there were very few men in this room he wouldn't consider to be cads.
Bea stomped back into the ballroom and struggled not to cry in the middle of all of these people. Did he always have to be so horrid to her? She liked him a great deal, he had a wonderfully odd sense of humor, and he really was a wonderful dancer. But he always treated her as if she were the most annoying pest.

Lillian opened her mouth to speak but then spotted Bea looking awfully upset. "Bea?" she said, brows furrowed as she stepped toward her.

Nick turned to look over at Bea. Once he'd determined that she wasn't bleeding, he frowned at her. "What's happened to you, Bea? You look miserable."
Bea sniffed and glowered at her cousin, then looked at Lillian with her lip trembling. "Your brother is beastly, and I hate him!"

"Well, of course he's beastly! That's not exactly news, Bea...What did he do this time?" she asked, laying a reassuring hand on her arm.

Bea lifted her chin, frowning as the word spilled out in a rapid mess. "We were dancing, and everything was fine, and then the song ended, and he ran off to the card room, and so I followed him, and he was in the corner sulking, and so I asked him what was wrong, and he told me to run along! To run along!" she finished in a high-pitched squeak.
Nick could see the first of the tears threatening, and he swiftly took Bea's elbow in one hand, and Lillian's in the other. "Perhaps we could move this discussion to somewhere a little less... public... before you burst into tears, Bea?"

"Yes, let's go out to the gardens," Lillian suggested. She bit her lip as they made their way outside. Oh, dear, Michael. What have you done?

Nick led Bea out into the gardens, depositing her onto one of the benches and standing in front of her with his arms crossed. "Now, why precisely are you upset?"
Bea immediately began to cry, much to Nick's irritation. "He's always so awful to me!" she sniffled. Nick let out a sigh and looked to Lillian for help. It was bad enough Bea had interrupted his dance with Lillian, but now she was sobbing like a child in the gardens.

Lillian put an arm around Bea's shoulders, comforting her. "Maybe you should go speak to Michael..." she suggested quietly, furrowing her brow at Nick. "I think I can handle this out here."

Nick gave a short nod, unsure who he should be more annoyed with: Bea, for getting upset for no reason, or Michael, for making her upset for no reason. "I'll be inside, if you two need me." He gave Lillian a slightly apologetic look and then turned to hunt down Michael.
Bea sniffled miserably and put her head against Lillian's shoulder. "And now Nick is mad at me, too!" she cried.

"No, sweetheart, he's not mad at you," Lillian assured her, squeezing her shoulders. "He's upset that you're upset, that's all."
Michael was still in the card room, though he was severely contemplating leaving. In fact, he was deciding upon it. Why should he stay here?

Bea finally slowed to sniffling and wiping at her eyes. "I don't understand why he's so mean to me," she mumbled.
Nick found him in his corner and walked straight for the chair beside him, taking a seat and lifting an eyebrow. "What the hell did you do, Michael?" he asked flatly.

"Because he's Michael. He's grumpy all the time, Bea, honestly," she informed her, her brow deeply furrowed. Michael was going to hear it when they got home tonight. "...What exactly happened?"
Michael slowly set down his drink, lifting his eyes lazily to look at Nick. "What are you talking about it?" He would feign innocence for now, though he knew he would have to pay for upsetting Bea.

"I don't know!" Bea wailed, working herself up again. "We were just dancing, and I said that he never took me seriously, and then he just closed up and stomped off!"
"Well, you've ruined my evening, for one," Nick answered calmly. "I was having a perfectly nice time being rude to Winchester, but now I have to deal with a sobbing mess of a cousin."
