Sapphy, however, was no longer concerned with Matthew. Her back straightened at the mention of all this turf war.
"Wait. Clearly, I don't... Wait, what? Are you serious? You kids are gonna fight over what? To what end?!" she couldn't get a completed thought out.

"That's a really good question," Race said sincerely. "If we have some kinda war conference, you should come stand up and ask it in just that tone of voice. And see if anyone has a rational answer."
Race had never understood the big deal about leading a lodging house. What were you leading, exactly? There wasn't even anything official about it. He understood Spot's anger over Sammy's betrayal, but he'd be the first to try to find a solution other than all-out violence.

Sapphy's smile -- which she used in situations that even included sadness, anger, and embarrassment -- finally dropped. Her forehead crinkled slightly.
"...Are you going to get involved?" she asked with obvious concern.

"I dunno. Like I said, I've still kinda got one foot in Brooklyn. And if Jack gets involved as Brooklyn's ally, I'll get mixed up in it too, 'cause that's just how things are with me and Jack." You'd think a habit of becoming close friends with leaders would have a lot of perks, but lately, Race thought it was just really unfortunate.
But he noticed Sapphy's concern and managed to summon his own smile back to his face. "You really shouldn't worry, though. Last I heard, Sammy and his boys left town, so there might not even be anything to fight over."
((I'm thinking this is before Race saw Sammy, obviously.))

"If there is a fight, I'm hot-footing it to California and I'm tying you down and takin' ya with me," Sapphy said plainly. She looked like she meant it, though. She felt like she meant it, too.

Racetrack raised an eyebrow. "Are you concerned for my safety, Miss Sapphire Eyes?"

"Of course I am!" Sapphy said, a little confused. "Why wouldn't I be?"

"Well, we've only known each other a day," he pointed out. "There are quite a few people I've known for many a year who probably wouldn't notice if I was, say, eaten by a horse, or fell in the river--much less drag me across the country to save me." He smirked at the thought. "Gotta warn you, though, I'd be a handful. Pining for Sheepshead and Little Italy. 'Sides, it's entirely possible Spot Conlon has little birds reporting from the West Coast."

"Hey, we may be strangers, but I'm not heartless," Sapphy said, waving it off and refusing to take a deeper look at it. "And out west, you'll be able to race the horses yourself."

"Tempting," he admitted as they entered the neighborhood of the lodging house. "But we've been dwelling on me long enough here. Betrayal, revenge, possible violence, it's all been very dramatic, so you should really tell me something more about you."

"What would you like to know, Racetrack Higgins? I'll let you ask me three more questions for today, and I'll answer them honestly... But then I get to ask you three as well."

((Ack, I'm so excited for this. ^_^ I'm gonna call it a night, and I'll be traveling most of the day tomorrow, but I promise some posting when we get to our hotel. In the meantime, three questions to ponder... 'Night! <3))

((G'night miss. Maybe this can be a running theme with them? Three questions a day. Have a great vacation!))

Race could hardly believe his luck. Three honest answers was a gift that was not to be squandered.
"Sounds fair," he agreed, "'cept...tell me if I ask something you really don't wanna answer. I don't wanna stir up bad feelings or nothing." And he was afraid his first question would do just that. "So, if you don't mind answering...how come your friends didn't help you out after your family left?" He wondered if there was someone he could soak--although, considering her strong views on the folly of fighting, that probably wouldn't endear him to her.

Sapphy, never one to back down from a challenge, sighed and shrugged. She gently pulled her bottom lip between her fingers for a moment.
"Here's the short version, because it's such a stupid story and I'll just end up getting angry again... Well, first they looked down on me for blowing it with such a well-off guy like Matthew. Then they got mad at me for not talking to them about it because friends evidently have to tell each other EVERYTHING. Then it turned into I was not worth having around, that I talked too much and I was annoying and I was growing up and not caring to gossip with them anymore. I'm leaving a few more personal things out, because I'd rather you keep talking to me after tonight."
She shrugged again, fingers still at her lips.
"They were never friends in the first place, basically."
