Sapphy's jaw set as she stared into Racetrack's eyes. Her own eyes were no longer glazed over and dreamy -- now she was wide awake and Sapphy instantly clammed up.
She pulled away from Race and turner her attention back to the track and field. She sat back in her seat, not looking at him.
((Ugh, such a blah note to leave it on, but I'm falling asleep babes. lol <3 niiiiight!))

((No worries. They'll make it through somehow! *determined face* 'Night, love!))
The moment she turned away, Race died a little inside. He wrapped his arms around himself and stared at the horses as they finished up the last leg. He couldn't pick out his current favorite or Sapphy's grey. They were all blurring together.
"I'm sorry," he managed to say. "It's just...if there's any chance you'd hurt yourself because of me...I'm not gonna risk that for the chance to kiss you, Sapphy. I can deal with anything else, but not knowing that I'm making it worse."

Sapphy was silent for a long time. Her eyes were on the horses, but she wasn't registering anything she was seeing. For once, mercifully, the thoughts were chased away. Her head was completely vacant from being stunned into silence by Racetrack's words.
"I really do like you Tony," she finally said. Her voice sounded foreign to her -- Irish accent gone once again. "I always have. I was just too stubborn and proud to admit I wanted to put myself through the ringer once more. I'm sorry for all those months."

He had to smile. Even under these circumstances, hearing those words was pretty much thrilling.
"I guess I really don't need to mention that I like you too." He turned to look at her again. "And I'm glad we had all those months. I know who you are now, and you know who I am, and...and I know I wanna be with you. But I also know I can still be your friend, if that's better for you. I mean, you said Copper knows you better than anyone, that you're like the same person. So no matter how I feel about him, I can't help taking his whole prophecy of doom seriously. That's all this is, Sapph, I swear. I wanna kiss you again, trust me. I just don't wanna be the one that makes you weak. I'd rather be the opposite."

Sapphy's brow furrowed. She was getting confused -- who did she believe? Her brother and Race? Or herself?
Her face started to turn red. She couldn't look at him.
"You make me happy, Race," she choked out, voice fading. "Why can't we just... Try? Why do we have to worry about what might happen? Why can't we just be?"

"We can," Race said, because there was no way in hell he could not say it. God, he tried to put other people first as much as he could, but this time, he didn't even know what would do the most good and the least harm. He only knew what he wanted and what she wanted, right now, in this moment. "Just...only if you're sure. Really sure. And you can change your mind anytime. And if things get bad, you have to tell me. You have to. Or I'll never forgive myself. And...there's also a very good chance your brother will push me out a fifth-story window."

"Not if I push him first," Sapphy whispered, shooting Race a little smile. She held out her pinky finger. "I promise."

He actually laughed, which shouldn't have surprised him--unexpected laughter was par for the course with Sapphy--and linked pinkies with her. And then squeezed her hand tight for a few seconds, looking her in the eye, because he did not want her to forget this promise.
And then he kissed her again, and the crowd went wild--and yes, they were cheering for the winning horse, but that certainly didn't register in Race's mind.

Sapphy kissed him back, pulling him close with her arms lazily around his neck. She smiled against his lips.

He smiled back and forgot literally every other thing in the universe while they made up for several months' worth of kissing. He kissed her lips, her earlobe, her neck--might've done more if he didn't very dimly remember that they were in the middle of a crowd. When he finally felt the need to breathe again, he was holding her, pondering the totally incomprehensible fact that they were together, and not even realizing that he had a considerable sum of money waiting for him in the bookie's office, because for the first time in his life, his horse had won.
((Off to bed with me now, but this time we end on a high note! ;D))

Sapphy laid against Race lazily, back to his chest as they watched the races. Those thoughts were all but gone in this moment and all she could think about was how much she loved the smell of cigars far surpassing any silly cologne.
She fingered the buttons on his vest idly, buttoning and unbuttoning the one at the top. She looked up at Race, blushed, and lowered her eyes again down to his buttons. She went back to flicking the button open and tucking it closed again.
She went speechless once again, but she didn't particularly mind it.

Race raised an eyebrow, looking down at Sapphy's fingers and the button, and wondered how fast this relationship was going to move. Because as long as Sapphy could handle things emotionally, he wasn't about to complain. But for now, cuddling in the sun while the horses went flashing past and the spectators cheered...it was more than enough.
((Aaand I can't tell whether their next step is fun sexy times or certain doom. Which is pretty much why I love them.))

((Funny thing is, the button thing isn't meant to be sexual at all. Sapphy's just keeping nervous fingers busy.))
"Next stop?" she asked softly before looking up at him. "I made the last two decisions, so now you have to think of two."

((Haha, that makes me love her all the more.))
It took Race a moment to remember what she was talking about, and then he laughed. "Yeah, I'd say that was definitely something we never did before." He thought for a while. "Well, I've never...been to Coney Island. Not since I was little, anyway. And they wouldn't let me on any of the rollercoasters then. Whadda you say?"

"Only if you buy me a soft pretzel," Sapphy grinned up at Race.
