Raven waited right outside the establishment waiting for Racetrack to arrive. There was no way she was walking inside there on her own. For the most part the place was filled to brim with mobsters, murderers and thieves and other such dregs of society. She stepped back from the door when a few customers came stumbling out.

Race showed up just a little late; his watch always had been slow. He spotted Rae and waved, striding over to her, already wearing his most innocent poker face. "Ain't been here in ages," he said in an undertone, glancing at the building. "I wonder if Sharkey even remembers me." He kind of hoped not. He was pretty sure he owed Sharkey money. "You ready?"

"Hopefully he doesn't, you probably owe him money," Raven remarked, looping her arm into his as they marched through the open door.

To Racetrack's suprise, he didn't see Sharkey anywhere when they walked in. Maybe he was supervising the opium portion of his establishment today...though he usually left that to the Chinaman. Shrugging it off, Race picked out a poker table with no familiar faces and pulled out a couple of chairs. "Deal me in. And the lady, too, just for kicks." He lowered his voice. "She don't even know the rules yet, so go easy on her, all right, fellas?"

Raven batted her lashes and shrugged, "I just want to try it out. See if I like playin," She said with a soft sweet voice. She sat down next to Race.

Race took his cards and examined them casually, making conversation to distract the other players while Rae signaled her cards to him. "So where's old Sharkey tonight? Did he finally give up on hovering around to make sure we ain't palming aces?" Race had always been too quick for him anyway.

One of the guys at the table blinked at Race, "You ain't heard? There's a new owner now, he just took over the joint."
Raven glanced at Race, but didn't say a word. She tossed out two cards and picked up two more.
"There's been lots of changes round here..." Another man said.

"Yeah? Like what?" Race asked, exchanging three cards and watching Raven out of the corner of his eye as the betting began.

"I hope nothing bad," Raven said sweetly.
"Well miss, I'm sorry to disappoint but evidently there's this new guy over in the Brooklyn Lodging house, supposed to be real bad." The poker player said and his friend nodded. "Hawk his name is."
"Oh," She chewed on her bottom lip, eyes staring intently at the cards.

For one of the few times in his life, Race had trouble maintaining his poker face. He glanced at Rae, still awaiting her signals as the guy sitting next to him placed his bet. Can't get distracted, not in a place like this. "Bad like how?" he asked casually.

Raven needed to get herself together and pretty damn fast. She cleared her throat and tugged at her collar. She had a good hand. She curled her hair around her ear indicating that she was close to a straight.
"Supposedly he don't really know what he's doing."
"Just wants to control the boys."
"More like threaten them into submission." The men around the table said.

Racetrack did not stiffen, nor did his eyes narrow or his hands clench into fists, but he could feel himself twitching with the instinct to do all those things. Instead, he played it cool, betting low to keep the other boys in the game, and said, "So I'm assuming he's got more going on than just papes." Then again, so had Spot and Tristan back in the day.

"course he does but nobody knows exactly what," the poker player said.
This was bad, Rae thought, really bad, then her next thought was that she needed to tell Spot. She glanced and Race and smiled sheepishly, "I really have no clue what I'm doing," she said, chewed on her bottom lip and tossed her bet into the pot.

Race sighed and shook his head at her. "Why'd I let you come along again?" He smirked inwardly as most of the other players stayed in the game. Time to show their cards--he spread out his hand, four of a kind, but all he could really think about was this business with Hawk and Brooklyn. He supposed it was better than thinking of Sapphy, at least.

Raven cleared her throat as she set out her own cards. "Is that good?" she asked innocently as she displayed a straight.
