There was book on Birdie's lap, borrowed from the library and with a title that made her blush to read it, but she couldn't seem to pay a lick of attention to the words. She sat on her bunk, the book cradled on her knees, and stared a little absently off at the opposite wall.
She'd nearly kissed Jack Kelly yesterday. Or, at least, she had thought about kissing him. And the poor boy was just being nice to her -- really nice, wonderfully nice, sweetly nice!
She giggled to herself, then blushed and put her hands up on her cheek, letting out a quiet little squeal. What should she do? She'd never really had much experience in dealing with boys before. Sure, the girls at her school had gossiped, particularly about the gardener, who just happened to be completely gorgeous and went without his shirt much of the time. But Birdie had never really had any sort of feelings for anyone in that way before.
She squealed again. What to do!

Fae came into the bunk room with a jig in her step, her body moving to the sound of an irish tune she'd hear on the street before she walked in. She was a storyteller and a bit of a daydreamer, when she stood on a street corner and told people stories she could lul them into some kind of magical place away from all of their troubles. She was a troubadour, or a bard out of her time.
"Hey Birdie." her accent was that of the ermerald isles and she was beaming when she dropped herself to her bed and wrapped her arms around her, leaning over to look at her. "Ya look like you're about to burst.." she scrambled over and sat next to her. "Tell me.." she loved a good story-- being who Fae was.

"Oh, Fae," Birdie said, biting her lip and grinning broadly. "Oh, goodness..." She buried her face in her book and squirmed, too full of butterflies and fluttery things to put it into words. "I think..."
She peeked over the top of the book at the other girl, feeling completely silly and useless. "I think I might be...IthinkImightbeinlove!" she squealed in a rush, then hid in her book again.

Fae giggled at the bright smile and moved closer adjusting herself before she took the book out of Birdie's hands and sat it by them, peering at her with a grin and an attentive look. Her grin widened and she opened her mouth in a gasp, "REally?!" she asked moving closer. "In love? Oh tell me, tell me the whole story!" She got squirming a little bit ad she faced her friend, unable to help it.
She told stories all the time, but she loved to hear stories just as much. And then there was the fact it had to do with love. Fae-- had never been in love and she loved hearing all about it. Made it seem more real to her. "Who? Who?"

"Oh, but it's ridiculous!" Birdie said, covering her mouth with her hands, her book-shield having been removed. She squeezed her eyes closed and blushed. "It's Jack. Jack Kelly." She squealed again and pulled her knees up to her chest, burying her face in them. "And I don't even know him that well!"

"Jack Jack?" Fae asked perking up and tilting her head before she beamed and wrapped her arms around Birdie. "He's one a me best mates! You couldna chosen better!" It was true in Fae's mind, she adored Jack on a purely they teased each other and had a grand time kind of way. Chuckling she hugged Birdie and rocked her. "He's a good un, our Jack."

Birdie burst into laughter, leaning her head against Fae's shoulder. "He is, he's so very good. He's been so nice to me, even when he didn't even know who I was!" She let out a little sigh and turned her eyes upward. "But he doesn't like me in that sort of way, I'm just a friend."

Fae was hugging her and leaned in to giggle, nearing her friends' words. "Mmm that's Jack for you-- lot of the boys are like that truth be told." She couldn't help her grin and she sighed when she heard her friend talk about just being friends. "Well.. I'm just his friend but... I don't get stars in my eyes when I talk about him either." She tapped her finger to her lips as she considered what they could do about the situation. "He might not--- he might have a keen for you too."

Birdie shook her head, hugging her arms around her middle. "He doesn't, Fae. He treats me just the same as he does everybody else." She groaned miserably. "Ugh, and I don't know what to do! I've never felt like this before, like everything is all jittery and fluttery and ugh!"

".. ya sure? He hit ya over the head with a pillow?" Truthfully Jack and Fae had an incerdibly strange relationship even for Manhattan, but they acted more like siblings and childhood friends that didn't want to grow up into being adults with each other. It was still like tugging hair and playing in the sand box. "Ah well-- maybe we can find out how he feels." Fae set her arms on Birdie's knees and tilted her head. "Oh love sounds so exciting, like the kind that makes your toes curl and your heart beating fast.."

Birdie glanced up at Fae and furrowed her brow. "Have you ever felt like that? It's rather nerve-wracking, actually..." She let out another sigh. "He's been such a good friend to me. I don't want to make him uncomfortable or anything."

Fae had to be honest and she shook her head, "Want the truth I haven't? Always wanted to though.." she smiled softly and almost dreamily. "Bit hypocritical of me to tell stories of love conquering all if I've never felt it meself." Grinning Fae shrugged her shoulders, "I don't think ya could make him uncomfortable, Jack.. is well Jack." She thought about it for a moment. She'd file that away how being in love could go at your nerves. "But... it's magic though, feelin' it?"

Birdie bobbed her head, grinning broadly. "It's...it's lovely!" She giggled again, embarrassed, then lifted her head and gave Fae a smile. "You'll fall in love someday, Fae, and it'll make your stories that much more vivid."

"Course it will," she said with a wide smile. "I'm in no rush? Know enough stories about love gone wrong to want to wait for what feels right, canna rush things like that." Taking the other girl's hands she smiled, "So-- how'd it happen? Tell me.."

"He... well, this will sound silly, but he kind of rescued me." Birdie laughed awkwardly and lifted her shoulders. "I was trying to get away from some guys, guys that my father owed money, and Jack helped me. He didn't even know me, but he helped me."
