Ryan opened his mouth to retort but noticed the waitress hovering at their table, waiting impatiently for their order. He motioned for Lillian to go first while he quickly glanced over at the menu once again.

Oh, great. Now that the waitress had taken the menu, Lillian had nothing to hide behind.

Once the waitress took away their menus, Ryan looked over at Lililan, shaking his head at her. "Are you embarrassed to be with me?" he teased, having way too much fun. "Then again, you're cute when you blush."

"I know for a fact that I'm not, so please stop!" Lillian really wanted to pinch him or kiss him or something.
Then, Lillian made a decision. She would make fun of herself. "You better get some extra napkins, I think my sandwich has mayonnaise on it. Lord knows I'll get that everywhere."

Lillian seemed nervous and Ryan decided to stop with the teasing. He wanted her to be comfortable, not on edge. "Messy eater?" he said, handing her a napkin. "Me too."

"You try," said Ryan, grinning at her. "You like the lily? I hope you do 'cause I ran around this morning trying to find some!"
He had actually bought a whole bouquet of them but figured a flower a day (or maybe two) should last him a while and get him brownie points with Lillian. That, and it was the perfect excuse to see her everyday.

Lillian was glad he changed the subject. She smiled over at him and nodded.
"I love it. Thank you ever so much." She had a small vase waiting in her kitchen for just such occasion.

It was true. Ryan sheepishly made his way towards the clinic, waving back awkwardly to the nurses that he didn't know. Oh, the life of living on a base.

Lillian blushed as she tried to bite back a smile. "That's not what I meant, but I'll graciously accept the compliment."
Underneath the table, she prodded at Ryan's shoe with her own.
