Lillian Wellsley put on another coat of her bright red lipstick, then smiled at herself in the mirror to check her teeth. She twirled a golden brown curl with her finger and made sure her hat was tilted to just the right angle.
She knew she shouldn't be so concerned about her appearance, because in the end it was her skill that really mattered. But today was her first day at the Champion Army Base in southern England. She knew a girl who was a nurse there now and said they hardly saw any action. The Germans hadn't seen fit to bomb there yet, thankfully. So, really, all Lillian would be doing was mingling with the soldiers... Who were probably bored and had nothing to do... So she might as well look good, right?
She got out of her car, adjusted her nurse's uniform, and walked into the clinic for the tour.

Lying on his cot, Ryan sighed. He was bored and the nurse was taking forever. The clinic was almost empty and he figured he'd be in and out as fast as possible. Apparently, he was wrong. Twenty-four... Twenty-five... He wanted to be back out training and getting ready but he was immediately sent to the clinic once his arm was grazed. Fucking misfire.
Ryan sighed once again, considering a nap. Thirty... Thirty-one...

"And this is the main room of the clinic where the patients are..." The older nurse named Mabel told Lillian, gesturing to the large room filled with cots and metal carts containing all kinds of medical supplies. "As you can see, not many patients now. Most soldiers we get are wounded during training or caught something."
Lillian peered into the room and saw only a couple soldiers lying down. Both were extremely handsome, and she couldn't help but smile slyly.
"Well, go ahead and jump right in, Miss Wellsley. I've got administration business to attend." Mabel droned, seeming like she was bored with Lillian.
"Oh--" Lillian squeaked as she watched Mabel walk off. "Well, then. Guess I'll just jump right in." She muttered to herself, making her way to the closest patient.
"Er, have you been helped?" She asked the soldier, hoping he wasn't asleep. His eyes were closed... Well, she'd rather he be asleep than dead.

"Nope," said Ryan, blinking his eyes open to see a nurse he wasn't familiar with. He was sure the boys kept tabs on who worked at the clinic and they never once mentioned someone that looked like her. Nevertheless, he wasn't complaining. She was nice to look at and he was hurt. Maybe the guy who shot the misfire wasn't going to get a beating after all.
"I've just been waiting."

"Oh! Sorry!" Lillian said, biting her lip then thinking the better of it. She didn't want to be caught reapplying her lipstick on the job. Especially on her first day.
"What's wrong, love?"

"Just a graze," said Ryan, showing her his arm. "No big deal. Some dumb-ass got too excited at training and here I am."
He sneakily looked her over. She wasn't too bad. Definitely cute, especially with that accent.

Lillian wasn't too surprised at his American accent. Her friend, Evie, had told her there were some Americans there who wanted in on the action.
"I'll fix that straight away." Lillian flashed him a smile before heading to the nearest cart and getting the supplies she needed. She put some antiseptic on a piece of gauze and went back to the cot.
"This is going to sting... A lot." She warned him before putting the gauze on his wound.

Ryan watched her as she walked off to gather supplies. He couldn't keep his eyes off of her, extremely curious as to why she would be here out of all places.
"I can take it," said Ryan with mock confidence. Or at least I hope so...

Lillian rubbed the saturated gauze on his wound, squirting a little more antiseptic on it for good measure. Not because she was being mean, not at all.
"Where are you from?" She had been taught to ask lots of questions while treating a patient, to take their mind off things.

Ryan inhaled sharply once the gauze touched his skin. He curled his hand into a fist, trying to resist the pain that just shot through his body. He looked at her in surprise when she added a bit more antispetic. Damn misfire.
"New York," he said after taking a couple breaths to gain his composure. "Manhattan, more specifically. I'm guessing you're from around here?"

"Mmmhmm." Lillian nodded slowly, not wanting to break her concentration as she wrapped the bandage around his arm. "Born and raised."
She stood up straight once she was finished dressing the wound. "There. It should heal completely in a week or two. You should probably stay here and rest for the remainder of the day. Do you need anything else?"

"I have to stay here for the day?" repeated Specs in confusion. It was only graze! Then again, he'd be able to see her...
"Can I still... walk around and stuff? I don't have to sit in this bed all day, do I?"

"Yes, just try not to move your arm much. Don't want to take any chances now, do we?" She winked at him before walking over to the other patient and seeing what he needed.
