Sapphy's head rested on his shoulder, her fingers twitched into his shirt slightly before completely curling into the fabric. She sighed softly and moved a little further onto him.
((...Bwahaha.))

Race liked to think he was a decent human being. The kind of guy a girl could be best friends with, knowing he'd never expect anything more. The kind of guy who Spot Conlon allowed to take his girlfriend out on the town because he knew they'd just play cards or gorge themselves on pasta.
But he let Sapphy's body melt into his for an endless and blissful five seconds before he leaned toward her ear and said, very loudly, "SAPPHY."

Sapphy jerked awake and promptly fell on the floor.

"Sorry!" Race guiltily leaned over the side of the bed and offered her a hand. "You were, uh...I thought we should..." He motioned dramatically at the window. "It's daytime!"

Sapphy scowled and wordlessly laid back down. She threw the sheet over her head.
"We should stay in bed all day," she replied, settling down again.

On this day of all days, it was seriously unfair of God to tempt Race with the option of spending the entire day in bed with Sapphy.
He didn't want to have responsibilities. He didn't want Spot or Tristan or Brooklyn or Manhattan or any of it right now.
Except Raven. He wanted to, had to, see Raven. And besides, he told himself firmly, Sapphy just wanted to sleep. "You can if you want. I wouldn't blame you. But I've gotta take care of a couple things."

"Like what?" she asked softly, peeking out from under the covers.

He didn't want to tell her. He remembered her face last night, and he desperately wanted to keep this funny, scowling, just-woke-up version of Sapphy, in place of the Sapphy so full of pain she couldn't even speak.
But he couldn't lie to her. "I was gonna go see Raven."

"...Oh," she said softly, considering this. "Would I be awful if I stayed here? I just figure... She'll have a lot of visitors today."
((...I'm actually running out the door to go play soccer with my kids. Have a good night!))

Race was profoundly relieved that she hadn't fallen apart. For that matter, he was profoundly relieved that he wasn't falling apart. It was like somehow, they had saved each other last night. This is not a time for cheesy thoughts, Higgins.
"It wouldn't be awful, Sapph. You're right, she'll probably be overwhelmed as it is. I'll let you know how she's doing."

"Thanks, Race," she murmured, stretching her arms far over her head and arching her back. She lounged comfortably.
"You hungry?" she asked. She turned onto her stomach.

He hadn't noticed until this moment, but... "Yeah. We could go see the gracious nuns, unless you have something else in mind."

Sapphy shook her head, propping her head up with her elbow.
"I'm not hungry, just checking up on you."

"Well, thanks," he said with a smile. "I'll see the nuns on my way to the hospital. Bread's always stale by this time of day, but what can you do?"
It finally occurred to him somewhere in the middle of that last sentence that she wasn't wearing pants. He looked up at the window again and gallantly allowed the sun to blind him as he got up and looked for his vest.

Sapphy moaned softly as she curled into the warm spot Race left behind. Her brother's old, oversized shirt rode up a little further on her hip.
((REGRETS I HAVE NONE.))
