Sapphy burst out laughing. She just couldn't imagine...
"I'm sorry I missed it. Must have been a sight. Well, congratulations," she said, mock-bowing to Race.

"Why, thank you." He basked in his victory for a moment or two, then realized she'd deflected the question. Again. Coincidence, or...? "So," he said casually, "do we still owe each other three honest answers a day? Or do you think we've learned all each other's juicy secrets by now?"

"Well, obviously, we learned them all, Racetrack Higgins," she smiled at him coyly.

"Oh yeah? So what have you been up to this past week or two?"

Sapphy's eyes bore into Race's.
"I've been out," she said simply.

"Ah." There was a completely unambiguous deflection. "Well, I hope your outings have been enjoyable. And in no way potentially fatal. If you run into anyone named Dragon, you should prob'ly come home," he recommended, sipping his water. It wasn't like Sapphy couldn't keep secrets from him if she wanted to. Though it wasn't doing much in the way of alleviating the awkwardness.

This was horrible.
Sapphy had been doing nothing but burning money for the last week -- sometimes literally. She'd been drinking and going home with strange men and if Racetrack knew any of that, she knew she'd lose his respect and possibly more. Especially the part where fatality was a wide-open option.
But it was all she'd been doing lately, and she had nothing else to talk about.
"Sorry," she said softly.

He gave her a half-smile. "'S'all right. We can talk about the future instead. I, personally, am planning to go to the races tomorrow. I'll probably lose my whole fortune and feel really ashamed afterward, or else triple it and buy a mansion on the West Side and maybe hire Sophia to cook for me."

Sapphy smiled.
"I'm gonna go to California, get a horse, and rob banks."

"Great! You can send me money to keep up my mansion. And train your horse for the races so I can bet on her and buy another mansion, which I'll give to Jack and Stagey, or Spot and Rae, or Tristan and Nevada...they can all roll for it."

"What do I get out of all this?" Sapphy demanded, leaning heavily against the table and gesturing dramatically. "I do all the foot work at the banks. Train a horse for you. Apparently I have to come back to New York to race it. What about me, Race?" she smirked.

He laughed. "Well, what do you want, Sapphy?"

A good fuck. A ticket out of here. My family. To smile and mean it. A strong, sturdy rope...
She shrugged.
"Touche. I suppose this means I'll be your slave and do all of that for you then," she grinned.

He shook his head. "I think it'd be more the other way around. I'd have to do anything to stay in your good graces so you'd keep sending money. But if there's nothing you want...well, I'll just send you really witty letters. Boxes of pasta." He considered. "I could ship Kennedy across the country as a musical telegram to sing your praises. I bet she'd do it for free."

Sapphy smiled at the image, completely lighting up at mention of dear, dear Kennedy.
"She should start that service here in New York. She'd make a fortune," Sapphy lamented, playing with her knife idly.
