Sapphy rushed into Mama's. She had a hard time finding it and was running late. She accidentally threw the door open a little loudly. She jumped at the sound, startled.
She blushed and looked at all the eyes turned to her. Great.
Race had won some kind of ridiculous contest and asked her to celebrate with him by finally taking her to Mama's. Sapphy had her own money, ready to pay for herself and jingling in her pocket. She hoped this place didn't cost too much...
It'd been awhile since her and Race were really one-on-one. There was that early morning and nap they took together in Brooklyn -- that seemed forever ago. But she had felt funny after the whole ordeal and decided to give them both some space; particularly because he was so busy in Brooklyn and it was such a long walk. The next attempt was at Tristan and Nevada's shotgun wedding. The entire time of which Race was playing cards while Sapphy babysat Raven and Kennedy. He invited her and they barely spoke two words the entire reception and after party.
Sapphy was not liking this track record. She peered around the restaurant before spotting Race at a table and slunk over, embarrassed. "Hi," she smiled at him widely.

"Hi." He smiled back, determined that this would not be awkward. After everything that went down in Brooklyn, a little awkwardness was natural enough, but they were over that now. They were two friends having dinner. "Take a seat, have a menu. How've you been? Been a while since we really talked."

It was probably a good thing Race wasn't around the lodge lately... Because neither was Sapphy. She scratched her temple and moved her fingers along her jaw to her chin as she considered this question.
"Just fine," she settled on, smiling. "And you?"

"Not bad. Things have been quiet lately, which is kind of a nice change. For now, anyway." He generally didn't like things too quiet for too long. "Actually ain't been gambling much, though with this sudden large sum of money..." He looked a bit dreamy, considering the possibilities, then snapped back to the moment. "Do you know Raven's staying in Manhattan?"

"I saw her yesterday on the roof," Sapphy smiled, nodding.

He smiled back, glad that Sapphy and Rae were hanging out. "I had to tell Jack that we're hiding her from Spot for a while. That was a fun conversation. So what have you been up to?" he asked as a waitress approached their table, and Race turned to give his order. "Ciao, Sophia. I'll go with the tortellini this time."

"Uh..." Sapphy stumbled over her thoughts and snatched the menu. She quickly flipped it open, scanning for one word. "Lasagna, please." She'd been craving it for some time.

Sophia took down their orders and smiled brightly at Racetrack. "And where is your usual lady friend today? It has been a while since we see her! Is she doing all right?"
Race fidgeted a little. "Raven's, uh...she's doing fine, Sophie. I'm sure she'll be back soon. This is Sapphy, by the way."
"A pleasure!" said Sophia, and blew Sapphy a kiss before bustling off to the kitchens. Race shook his head and turned back to Sapphy, having completely forgotten that he'd asked her a question. "Lasagna! Good choice."

"My ma always liked to try new foods. Lasagna was my favorite, she made the best." Sapphy said a little nostalgically.
((I totally just posted that greaser crack in AU.))

((YES. I'm on it. And Rae, yay for creeping! Poor Race didn't even want to get into the whole "not my girlfriend, and really not in the mood for spaghetti lately" thing.)) "Mine too. If there can be two best lasagnas," Race said with a grin. "It's all about the cheese for me. With most Italian foods, actually."

"Cheese and sauce," Sapphy agreed. "Needs the right spices."

"Oregano and garlic and sometimes a little nutmeg..." Speaking of spices, Sophia swooped over to give them both water and a plate of garlic bread. Race munched on a piece, looked at Sapphy, and finally remembered his question. "So, you ain't said what you've been up to. Nothing dangerous, I hope?" he said, only half-joking. He'd had quite enough of friends in danger.

"Dangerous is my middle name," Sapphy grinned wirily. She really didn't want to admit what she'd been doing to Race, of all people. "But what about you? What was that contest you were telling me about?"

"Oh yeah, Jack wanted to see who could sell the most papers. We all stood around in Greeley Square hawking headlines, and the first guy to sell out won everyone's profits for the morning. I may have resorted to using this," he admitted, pulling out the harmonica. "Songs from old Ireland. Won over half the crowd."
