Seeing no one he really knew, just a bunch of squares, Race followed her to the booth and took off his Rocket jacket, hanging it on the back of the seat. He scanned the menu, then looked up at his companion with a teasing grin. "So, what the hell are we doing anyway? Besides pissing your brother off."

"I don't do things to piss my brother off, I do whatever seems fun at the moment. So don't lemme regret it," Sapphy grinned at him.
"So, why a Rocket?" she asked flatly. "You coulda made a cute Jailbird."

Fun in the moment was pretty much Race's policy too. He shrugged at her question. "I grew up with all those guys. Same neighborhood, same junior high. At some point we all bought leather jackets and got really badass and became Rockets." He smirked. "What's your story?"

"Pretty much the same. Old friends from the neighborhood started The Jailbirds after it became a pattern for some of them getting thrown into juvie. My brother Copper stole from a restaurant's cash register but since they could only prove he had stolen goods on him and not the actual act, he wasn't in there for so long."

"Gotcha." Race was pretty sure their gang had gotten its name because they always used to shoot off bottle rockets in their backyards, but that was decidedly less badass, so he didn't mention it. A cute waitress came over to them, and Race flashed her a charming smile and ordered a mint sundae.

"Chocolate malt and french fries, please," Sapphy said before turning back to Race. "Do you even know why The Rockets and Jailbirds hate each other? It's never been explained to me except it has to do with Copper and Spot..."

Race winked at the pretty waitress as she left, then nodded grimly. "A girl," he said. "What else would it be? I forget her name--they called her Crow or Blackbird or something--anyway, Spot was dating her, but your brother made a play for her at some party. No one seems to agree on whether she gave in or not, but Spot blew up, we got involved, Copper's friends got involved...it was quite a party," Race said a bit nostalgically. "And ever since..." He made a sweeping hand gesture. "War!"

"Sounds like my brother," Sapphy muttered. "No wonder I wasn't told -- I woulda smacked my brother through a wall." No one seemed to know this, but, Copper may have been the leader of The Jailbirds, but his sister had him wrapped around her little finger.
"I love my brother, I love my gang, and I love being a Jailbird, but I have better things to do than watch out for you Rockets."

((^_^ I had to do it.))
"Unless we interrupt your nail-filing," Race said with a smirk. "Honestly, I've got nothing against Copper, but the fights are fun, the parties are great, and chicks love the jackets." He pulled a cigarette out of his pocket, put it back, produced a pair of dice, put them back too, and finally found a quarter. "Any requests?" he asked, heading for the jukebox.

"Somethin' hot," Sapphy said, eying Race's jacket obviously and appreciatively. He wasn't kidding -- he looked good in it.

((literally just Googled "hot 1950s songs"))
For the sole purpose of being a smartass, he put on "Cold, Cold Heart" and rejoined her at the table just as the waitress arrived with their orders. Race took a spoonful of ice cream and closed his eyes to savor it. Ice cream was important in his life.

Sapphy took a french fry and dipped it into her chocolate malt in lieu of ketchup.
"Have you ever tried this?" she asked.

"No," said Race after giving his sundae a moment of silent worship, "and I'm not sure I'd survive the attempt." But he stole one of her fries and poked a corner of it gingerly into the malt.

"Sweet and salty, like me," she grinned playfully.
((Oh my god, I'm so full of cheese after watching Cry-Baby.))
