Risk gladly took the cigarette as he flicked away the other that previously burnt out. "Bronx. Then here. I always moved around, though. Never stayed in one place for too long."

"Sounds like a running theme around here," Copper muttered, lighting a match. He offered to light Risk after lighting his.

Letting Copper light his cigarette, Risk shrugged. "Everyone's from everywhere else... or so I hear."

"Not me and Sha-- Sapph," he quickly corrected, trying not to roll his eyes. At least his nickname was given to him by his family. Shaye's was just ridiculous and phony.
"We grew up just a couple of blocks from here."
((Off to bed, tootsie. I really need to stop not-sleeping. xo ))

"Really?" said Risk in shock. It was rare for locals themselves to become newsies. He always expected most of them to be from somewhere else. "Why don't both of you just live at home?"

"It's gone, mate. All the money for one is gone, too."

"Mmm," managed Risk, spotting Tibby's not too far away. "I'm guessin' family's gone too except for Sapphy?"

"Gone out west," Copper said, wanting to make things clear. "But that's okay. We Nolans are tough as fucking nails, mate. We get by, even if we can't be with each other."
They walked in the door a few moments later.
"What about your family."

"I can see that," smirked Risk, recalling how Sapphy handled herself when Goblin was around.
Risk cleared his throat. "Me? Let's see... I never knew my Mom except for this small tattered picture. I hated my Dad and left him behind a long time ago and I've haven't seen my sister in years. Just me by my lonesome."

"Years?" Copper repeated, frowning slightly. "I couldn't imagine that... I'm sorry, mate. Were you two close?"

Risk nodded unhappily. It was the first time he'd shown emotion to anyone. Then again, he wasn't looking for dirt on Copper at the moment. He took a seat at a nearby booth before continuing.
"Yeah. She was younger and I was the one always lookin' after her," he explained. "We got separated. I lost her."

"How? ...If you don't mind me asking, of course," Copper added sympathetically.

"She took a part-time job as a maid with some hoity-toity family. Apparently, it was more than part-time. It was as if they owned her. We'd try to meet but it was almost impossible. Next thing I know the family moved and I couldn't find her... then I got stuck with some bad people and haven't seen her since."

"Sorry mate," Copper whispered softly, looking down at the table. He had absolutely no idea what to say -- if he lost Sapphy he'd be inconsolable.

Risk shrugged, surprised he revealed more than usual to someone, especially someone he'd just met. "It's in the past. Can't do anythin' about it."
((Oooh, I need someone to put the pieces together about Risk & Ershey being related!))
