Macbeth couldn't believe she was back in East Side Manhattan. There were practically as many ghosts for her here as there were in Five Points, and she'd thought she was through with New York altogether--through with the United States, in fact. But a year in London had only taught her that it was actually possible to be lonelier than she always had been, and besides, she didn't want Jo growing up with that damned accent. And then she'd gotten Ershey's letter.
So she'd borrowed money and booked her passage, and her ship had docked last night. She'd taken care of Jo, and now she was trudging in the door of this lodging house, lugging a single bag and scowling and hating the world. Nothing ever really changed.

Making her way down the steps, Ershey was ready to start selling for another day. Rubbing her eyes, her brows furrowed in confusion when she saw the somewhat familiar figure in the lobby. Once she fully regained her focus, she stood at her spot as she gasped loudly. Bounding down the steps, she immediately ran towards Macbeth, enveloping her in a massive and tight hug.

Macbeth, scrawny little thing that she was, dropped her bag and almost toppled over. She rolled her eyes but had to smile as she returned the hug and then pushed the other girl away to get a good look at her. "Hey, Ershey. Didn't think I'd actually come back, didja?"

"You're here!" squealed Ershey, smiling widely as she looked at her old friend. She was glad to have her back, her heart swelling with excitement. "And no, I didn't think you'd actually come back!"

Beth shrugged. "London's nothing special. Dirtier'n New York, if you can believe it. And my dad's family didn't like me much once they met me, can you imagine that?" She smirked a little. "Been a long time since since anyone was glad to see me. How've you been?"

"That just means you're meant to come here," smiled Ershey happily, grabbing her friend's hand and leading her to the couch to sit down. "Not bad. Good, actually. Better than I thought I would be. Got any fun stories?" Putting her elbows on her knees and leaning forward, Ershey waited patiently for her friend to spill the beans.

She leaned back on the couch and sighed. "Lived in a lodging house, just like here. Sold papes, just like here. Met a crazy French girl. Found the biggest bloody library the world's ever seen." A dazed, nostalgic look crept over her face. She would certainly miss borrowing half a dozen rare old books every week. "Met some fam'ly, like I said. A couple of my cousins were all right. They'll write, I guess. And you 'member Jo, the baby who's my niece, not my secret love child? She's got some words now...mostly 'Beth.'"
She smiled to herself, then returned to the present moment and looked sullen again. "And what've you been up to, Ersh?"

"Aww, Jo!" squealed Ershey, excited to hear about the little bundle of joy. "You know that there's a library here too, right?"
Upon hearing her second comment, however, Ershey couldn't help but smile. "Things are surprisingly better than ever. I met someone too."

"'S'not the same," Macbeth said of the library, sighing.
Her eyebrows went up at Ershey's announcement. "Oh, really? You'll have to give me a description in case I happen to meet him. Wouldn't wanna, y'know...be myself."

Copper stumbled into the lodging house. Damn, he had a long night. He had a stupid grin on his face as he wandered into the lobby and sloppily sign the ledger.
He laughed softly to himself.

Macbeth turned at the sound of the door opening, and saw a manically grinning redhead who stank of booze. She turned back to Ershey, eyebrows rising higher. "That's not him, is it?"

"Hullo loves," Copper stumbled slightly, walking by the couch. "Either of ye got a spare schteamer?" he asked, making the cigarette motion with his hands.

Macbeth glared at him. "What the bloody hell are you talking about?" There was still an embarrassing trace of Cockney in her voice. To Ershey, she added, "Please tell me that's not him."

Ershey gave Macbeth a look as if to say 'You can't be serious' before shaking her head to confirm a 'no'.
"A spare what?" muttered Ershey, looking at the boy in confusion. She hadn't met him before but he looked oddly familiar.

"Schteamer!" he repeated, making a motion to puff on a cigarette once more. "Schteamer! Come on, now!"
