She occupied herself with the plaid Race mentioned earlier, smiling down at the fabric. Race did look awfully nice in plaid...

Race didn't find the stockings till the girl at the counter was ringing up his purchases. Then he almost dropped them, and the cashier giggled and added them to the pile for him. Race grinned to himself--he couldn't very well help picturing Sapphy in them--as she bagged the items and handed them over. Then he returned to the plaid section and presented the bag to Sapphy with a flourish.
