"Nothing wrong with that," he assured her. "Just seems like whenever I turn my back on someone, they get into some kind of trouble. Can't take you kids anywhere." He shook his head.

"Don't tell me you don't get in trouble either," said Ershey, raising her eyebrow at him skeptically.

"Not for a while. You just better all be there to help me out when I do," he said with a grin. He didn't really doubt they would be.

"Of course," smiled Ershey. "Sapphy will be draggin' me along like no other. 'Sides, you did help me from jumpin' out the window just earlier at the bunkroom. How're you and Sapphy, anyway?"

"We're good." He smiled a bit dreamily, thinking of nylon stockings. "Couldn't be better, really. 'Cept...you met her brother yet?"

"Actually, yeah... I have," said Ershey nodding. "Quite a character, that one. Have you?"

"Oh yeah." Race looked skyward for guidance. "He thinks I'm the Antichrist. I never did anything to the guy. I wasn't even sating Sapphy when we met!"

"Yeahhh, he was askin' me about you," said Ershey, chuckling softly.

"Oh, really?" Race was suddenly very interested. "You didn't tell him anything useful, did you? Flaws, weaknesses?"
((ROFL. Race and Copper started out super intense, but now they're getting hilarious.))

"I didn't you that well, then, so no worries," said Ershey, grinning. "You're safe."

"Oh, thank God," Race said, and hesitated, but he couldn't help himself. "Notice any of his flaws or weaknesses?"

"He's a bit... not uptight but high strung? Is that it? I think he's just very concerned for Sapphy. She is his sister. I don't blame him."

Race sighed. "I know he's concerned for her. He had me half-convinced I shouldn't be dating her 'cause she'll end up...getting hurt." He didn't know how much Ershey knew about Sapphy's issues, and he wasn't about to go around broadcasting them. "Hell, sometimes I still believe it."
He snuffed his cigar out, looking distant and troubled for a moment, then shook his head and smiled again. "Sorry...no more Copper rants, I swear. You got enough problems of your own."

Ershey shrugged. "Rant all you want, I understand. Having an older brother breathin' down your neck isn't the best thing in the world. You guys'll warm up, I'm sure," she said, gently nudging him on the shoulder. "Well, I'm here if you need to talk to anyone, y'know?"

"You're a good person," he informed her. "Hold onto that optimism, it's in short supply around here." Race was an optimist himself, and even he occasionally felt dampened into gloom by all the drama.
