Sapphy covered a wide yawn with her mouth as she found her place in line. Just another ordinary morning. Ordinary. Even with the Refuge plot slowly coming together, Sapphy didn't feel much different. She didn't feel like any help. She felt useless as usual.
Sigh.
((Updated a bit since this was more towards the start of Sapphy's depression.))

"Les, come back here!" David called, running after his younger brother. The night before, Jack had had the bright idea of giving Les a couple cents to buy candy with, which his brother had promptly spent. Instead of devouring it as soon as he bought it, however, Les had decided to save it all for breakfast this morning, and he was now as hyper and wild-eyed as a monkey.
Les glanced back over his shoulder to see if David was gaining on him. Not even close. With an excited cackle, the younger of the two Jacobs brothers dove into the crowd of newsies that was beginning to gather and disappeared.
David groaned. Today was not starting off well.

Sapphy smiled, watching the obvious brothers chase and elude each other. When Les came upon Sapphy, she wordlessly pointed for him to hide between her and one of the bigger newsies.

Les grinned, mouthing a thank you. He'd lost a front tooth. He slipped in behind somebody and hid.
David frowned, stomping over in their general direction. "Hey, Saph. You seen Les? He doesn't wanna sell me with me, but Mom says he has to."

"Who's Les?" she asked blankly.

((It just occured to me that they might not know each other. But I'm gonna say they do, cuz it's David and who doesn't know David so whatevs!)) David blinked at her, then pursed his lips. "Sapphy. Seriouly. Where's Les?" He shifted a little on his feet. He kinda missed the days before they let girls live in the House. There weren't as many around then. And girls made him nervous.

((It's all good!))
"Could you describe this Les?" Sapphy didn't know David that well, just that he was Jack's Best Friend. She'd seen the Jacobs brothers around the D.C. but never took the time to really get to know them. David and Sapphy knew enough about each other to exchange friendly nods.
But Sapphy always had a soft spot for kids. Les was one of them.

David grumbled. "You know what my brother looks like, Sapph..."
Les couldn't help it. He giggled over the sigh of his brother so uncomfortable, and the game Sapphy was helping him play.
Which of course David heard, so he reached around Sapphy and took hold of Les by the neck.
"Aww, come on, Davey! Just lemme sell with Snipes today. We won't cause no trouble, I promise!" David sighed. He really wasn't in the mood to listen to Les whine all day, so he relented, calling out to Les as he took off to join Snipeshooter in line.
"Don't do anything stupid!"

Sapphy hid a smile unsuccessfully behind her hand, looking up at David with innocent eyes.
"Sorry, I had to get in on a little bit of the fun."

David gave her a sheepish sort of half-smile. "Well, Les appreciated it, that's for sure." He joined her in line, glancing over at her. She looked...tired. "How ya been? Haven't seen you in a while."

"I know, David, it's been years," she said nostalgically. They only met two times only a couple months ago.

He grinned a little lopsidedly. "Well, a few weeks, anyway. Ma makes me go to school usually. You and Racetrack still goin'?"

"Goin' where?" she grinned playfully. But she quickly dropped it. "As far as I know, we are. What's new with you?" She secretly was terribly jealous of David's schooling -- she missed going to school and would have happily traded places with him in a second.

David lifted a shoulder in a shrug. "Same ol', same ol', I guess." Truth was, he'd been avoiding the D.O. in the morning on purpose, mostly to avoid Jack. They weren't on exactly friendly terms since Jack unceremoniously dumped his sister.

"Same song, different singer," she nodded.
