"You know I wouldn't do that, right?" he said sincerely, reaching over to take her hand. He never bothered to define anything because he liked the way things were. And it just so happened it was that way for years.
"Well, did you want to... y'know, uh, make things official or something?"

"It's not like that's any more of a guarantee that we'll stay together," she muttered, thinking of her mother--though technically, American law had voided Daniel and Sashi Rowlands' marriage. She eyed Risk thoughtfully, running her fingers gently over his hand, and then grinned. "Honestly? I'd rather just keep people wondering."

"Beth..." he said slowly, quite scared that he'd get in trouble for what he was about to say. He suddenly wished she wasn't near hot tea. "Are you sure it's not 'cause... you're scared? You know nothing will change if we do decide to..."

She closed her fingers over his hand, pouring herself more tea with her free hand. "I dunno, I think you'll own me and all my property or something." The idea had always disturbed her a little. "'Sides, if nothing'll change, what's the point?"

"'Cause we can show off to everyone," he smirked, squeezing her hand. "'Cause we both have nothing to lose -- well, maybe Jo, but I have that taken care of. What? Quit looking at me like that! My point is... I want to be with you and you want to be with me, right? What's really stopping us other than... being lazy about it?"

"We're already with each other," she pointed out with a shrug, genuinely surprised that he was suddenly all gung-ho about this. "Why do we need someone to tell us we're allowed to be? 'Less you just wanna get me in one'a those frilly white dresses." She actually paled at the thought.

"Maybe not so frilly," replied Risk, wrinkling his nose. "I think it'd be good for Jo too. You ever think she's confused about family and who I really am to her?"

He'd hit a weak spot. "Maybe," she muttered, staring into her tea and then looking up at him. "So who are you to her?"

"I'm, uh..." he started, hesitantly wanting to answer. "I'm not her father, he's got Tristan. Well, sort of. Let's just say that I'm the closest thing she has to something stable... other than you, of course."

"Fair enough," she agreed. "Though if I'm her aunt, you might as well be her uncle. The aunt and uncle who are raising her, and being there for her every step'a the way, and ain't ever gonna go work for gang leaders or get kidnapped or murder anyone." She drained half of her second cup, still deep in thought. "I could maybe do a blue dress. Maybe. If there was cake."

"I like blue," smiled Risk, gently nudging her shoulder. "As long as Jo's happy, that's all that matters."

"I ain't saying we need any damn license," she reminded him firmly. The whole thing with her parents still smarted--plus, she might not have much in the way of property, but what she had was hers, goddamn it. "Jo ain't gonna be worrying about that. But a wedding I could handle. Prob'ly." The image of Alec in a suit almost made it worth it. She polished off her tea and glanced at the clock. "And, dear God, why ain't we in bed yet?"

"Good question," muttered Risk, finishing off his tea and taking their mugs to the sink. "C'mon, we'll figure this out another time... too many things happened today for us to be worrying about all this other stuff."

"Agreed." She got up and dragged herself to the bedroom, already shucking off her (black, non-frilly) dress. She crawled under the covers in her skivvies and sighed, waiting for Alec, reciting lines from Medda's latest play in her head, and worrying about tomorrow.

Once he dried the mugs, Risk made his way towards the bedroom, smiling once he saw Macbeth lying down. Shrugging off his shirt and tossing his pants aside, he crawled into bed and gently wrapped his arms around Macbeth.
"How are you?" he asked quietly.
