Ershey put her hand to her mouth, trying her best to hide her laughter.
"Well, aren't you the optimistic one?" said Risk, shooting her a look.

"Tell him my life story sometime, Ersh," Macbeth said, rolling her eyes and turning back to Risk. "We'll see how optimistic you'd be." Jo, who was a born optimist, reached out and grabbed his hand again. It was her new favorite toy.

"At least she likes me," muttered Risk, turning his attention towards Jo. "So, refresh my memory again... you two met at another lodging house?"
"That's right," nodded Ershey.

"I got there 'bout a week after my sister and my dad died," Macbeth supplied. "I was awful. You ain't even seen me awful. I think half the lodging house prob'ly decked me my first week there, and the other half was scared of me." She flashed him a hard smirk and managed to look thoroughly evil, even with a toddler in her lap.

"You surprisingly do not scare me," said Risk, smirking.
"Well, I guess it runs in the family," noted Ershey before winking playfully at her friend. "We just love you so much... wait, I forgot to ask the two of you considerin' everythin' that's goin' on... were you two on a date or somethin' at Irving Hall when I ran into both of you?" She looked at them curiously. Now it was her turn to be skeptical.

"No!" Macbeth replied quite vehemently, causing Jo to let out a yelp of surprise and kick her legs indignantly. "Just a...drinking kinda...thing." She crossed her arms, daring him to say any different.

"A drinking thing?" repeated Ershey, raising her eyebrow at Macbeth. The last thing she needed to hear was that her best friend and brother were dating.
"Well, it didn't start out that way," interrupted Risk. "I invited her to Irving Hall 'cause... well, I wanted to and she bet that she wouldn't show up. But she obviously did." Risk smiled at Macbeth, still quite proud that he'd gotten her to spend time with him.

"I wanted free drinks!" Beth snapped. "Goddamnit, Ersh, don't look at me that way. I don't date people. People don't date me. It just don't happen. And--and are you aware that your brother almost had sex with someone on the bar once?" Okay, low blow, but she did not appreciate the current direction of this conversation.

"Hey!" yelled Risk, causing a few people to look in their direction. Ershey, however, gasped and pointed at him.
"Him?!"
"Look, I had too much to drink and --."
"You always had too much to drink," said Ershey shooting him a look.
"I watched how much I had when I was with Macbeth! I wanted to be somewhat of a gentleman around her, geez!"

"He was a gentleman," Macbeth admitted grudgingly. "A very drunken, wobbly, obnoxiously happy gentleman."

"See?" said Risk, grinning. "Even Macbeth says so!"
Ershey sighed, refusing to push it any further. "Alright, fine."
"Of course, Macbeth tried giving me more..." he muttered under his breath, trying his best to look innocent.

Beth was quick to defend herself. "You know me, I was gone after two glasses! I was trying to even things up a little. How was I s'posta know about his whole disreputable past?"
She gave Risk a hard look. One of these days, she was going to ask him what the hell he'd done to Ershey when they were kids, and she wasn't sure how long this tentative semi-friendship was going to last after that.

"Okay, okay," said Ershey, rolling her eyes at the pair. "Just be grateful I got your butts home. You should've seen me tryin' to balance the two of you without fallin' down. Make sure to thank Race too."
"I like Race," nodded Risk. "He's fun."

"Was that the guy's name?" Beth frowned, trying to remember. "Did I, uh...hurt him at all?"

"Racetrack," said Ershey. "Or Race, whichever. Well, you sorta hit him on the face..."
Risk laughed, shaking his head. "I wish I remembered that!"
