He raised an eyebrow, considering. "Well, since this is technically free food, I could maybe stay a while. Mind if I save a few for my phantom sister?"
Actually, he was surprised he hadn't seen Clara all day. She'd been hovering over him since he got out of the Refuge. But she'd probably gone off to her precious friends in Brooklyn. Brooklyn! As if he didn't have enough worries.

She shook her head, smiling, glad he wasn't leaving just yet. "No problem, I'll wrap them up for you." She moved to find a brown bag, putting in a handful of cookies. She set the bag on the counter. "There, all yours." She hopped back up on the counter, smiling at him, chewing her bottom lip idly. "Glad you're hanging out with me."

He smirked and shook his head at her. "It's really not much of a hardship. But honestly, I think if you put yourself out there a little, you'll have more friends than you know what to do with. I wouldn't recommend sticking with me--it usually leads to trouble."

She tilted her head at him, considering. "I'm a big girl. I can handle it. And anyway, I don't know that I believe you. You're sweet." And maybe too hard on himself.

He tilted his head back at her. "Thanks, but you've only known me a few minutes. You gotta be more careful than that. I could be a really sweet serial killer for all you know." This girl seemed almost too nice and too trusting for the streets of New York. He was starting to feel like he might find himself looking out for her.

She laughed at that. "You could be. But I doubt it." She lifted a shoulder. "I'm a pretty good judge of character. It's the eyes." She leaned forward to tap her finger to the top of his nose lightly. "They're kind eyes. Pretty one's, too."

He blinked and flinched away slightly before he caught himself. She was flirting with him, and she was gorgeous, and he wasn't sure how to convince her that it was a terrible idea. After a moment, he just smiled and spoke lightly. "Well, Clara's got the same eyes, and you never know what she'll do when your back's turned. I'd keep an eye on all the baked goods if I were you."

She laughed again, shaking her head so her hair bounced. "Well, I don't know that I'd mind that. Why do I bake if not to make other people eat it. Can't have it all to myself. Probably had too much as it is. Where do you think these hips came from?" She scrunched her nose, but couldn't hide a throaty chuckle.

"Nature?" he suggested innocently, and then realized he was flirting back. Which was a stupid idea for countless reasons, and the whole touch issue was probably the least of them. He took another cookie without really thinking about it, and wondered if he could set her up with some nice, eligible newsboy--with far fewer issues.
In fact, that seemed like a brilliant plan. "Hey, you wanna go out somewhere tonight? Irving Hall, maybe?" He glanced out the window; it was almost evening. "Bet we'll run into other newsies there. Homebody or not, you gotta meet more people." He smiled winningly.

She lit up, smiling brightly. In her mind, this was as good as a date. "Out? Sure, I could go out." She slid off the counter so she was standing in front of him. "This ok, or should I change?" She gestured down at her clothes.

He laughed. "That'll be fine. Don't expect anything too classy. The shows are all right, though, and the bar's not bad either." Of course, this would require that he actually go out and be social too. Maybe he hadn't thought this through as well as most of his plans. "Shall we?" he said, holding the door open for her. ((I guess it would be sane for me to go to bed at this point, but--new thread in Irving Hall tomorrow? )

She smiled at him again as she walked out the door. "Well, aren't you polite." She fell into step beside him, keeping close. ((You betcha! You go ahead and start it, and I'll keep an eye out and follow along Night!))
