Sapphy entered Tibby's, a little drenched. She removed her jacket and put it on the coat hanger that was right inside the door. Before she left Leo at the park, he mentioned Tibby's as a good, cheap place to eat. She had walked back toward the lodging house and found it easily... She just got caught in the rain.
Sapphy glanced around for an empty table, tucking a wet strand of hair behind her ear.

Blink sat at the table in the far corner by the window. He was busy shoving a ham sandwich, fries, cola, pickle, and sundae into his face... At the same time.
"I haven't seen Mush all day," he commented to Race, who was sitting across from him.

"Me either," Race muttered, sipping his coffee and scanning the tip sheet for tomorrow's big race. "Ain't he still seeing that girl?" Then he looked up and raised an eyebrow at the sight of Blink inhaling his meal and dessert simultaneously. "You know I could sell tickets to this, right?"
Looking around, he spotted a sopping-wet girl who had just walked in. "Hey, miss, care to take a bet on whether this bum'll choke to death?"

Sapphy's eyes focused on Race for half a second before looking over at Blink.
"I say he has experience. He'll live," she muttered with a quick smile at Blink.

Blink cast the girl a flirtatious wink with bulging cheeks... And when he realized it looked like he was just blinking at her, he swallowed and wagged his eyebrows.

Race watched this exchange with thorough amusement. "Oh, yeah, that was charming, Blink. You should try that at a classy party sometime." He stood up and removed his hat, which you were really supposed to do as soon as you got inside, but Race reserved the gesture for pretty girls. "Racetrack Higgins," he announced, offering a hand. "Care to join us?"

"Oh!" Sapphy looked down at herself and tried to dry her hands -- though it was useless -- before gingerly taking Race's hand with her own. "Your name sounds familiar..." she said slowly, squinting at Race slightly before sitting down next to him.

Sapphy tilted her head, confused.
"IIIII don't know," she said slowly, making up for her confusion by smiling widely -- her defense mechanism. She glanced over Race a few moments longer before it dawned on her. "Newsboy Lodging House sign-in! ...Both of your names," she said, turning to include Blink.

"I think we're fascinating," said Race in a wounded tone. "Well, me, anyway. You're just kinda disgusting." He made a face at his friend and smiled brightly at the girl. "So we're housemates, then! Have you been there long? Gotten to know a lot of folks? We've got a friend called Mush, but he can't really talk to girls. If you've run into a stuttering, blushing fool, that was probably him."

"Only about a week," Sapphy said, pushing her hair back out of her face. She glanced around for a menu and picked up a piece of paper that listed all the prices. "I've only really talked to Stagey. And Leo a few minutes ago, actually. Yes," she said, almost to herself. "Stagey, Leo, and Mister Kloppman... I'll be sure to remember Mush," she said, before looking up from the menu to look back at Race.
Whenever Sapphy talked or listened to people, she always looked them right in the eye. Many found it unnerving, and few rarely met her eyes. How odd, right?

Race blinked and met her eyes out of habit, because Spot used to do the intense-gaze thing all the time, and judge anyone who looked away to be a sniveling coward. "Kloppman's a great guy, and I've said hello to Stagey and Leo once or twice. I've been here five or six years now, and I try to keep track of all the new faces. Don't know how I missed yours." Without looking away from her, he asked for another coffee and poked Blink in the ribs for his gluttony, then realized something. "Hey, you ain't mentioned your name yet."
