((I've never really gotten a chance to play/write Tree when she wasn't a generically boring self-insert, so I might come back and retcon this profile a bit if things change as she develops.))
Name: Helen Fletcher
NN: Tree
Age: 16 (in 1899)
Date and place of birth: October 13, 1883; Manhattan
Personality: Tree loves hearing people tell stories because she has a vivid imagination, and she wishes more than anything that she knew how to read. Her imagination leads to a lot of pleasant daydreaming, so she doesn’t get bored easily and doesn’t mind being alone, but it also causes her to have terrible nightmares and an intense fear of the dark. Animals also freak her out a bit, though she’s gotten more used to them since she became a newsie. She’s very attached to her pocket knife, which she carries with her everywhere, because it was one of the first things she stole after she ran away from home. Tree is naturally bright and she learns quickly, but because of her sheltered early life, she’s still unschooled in the ways of the world. She was very inexperienced at dealing with people before she came to the lodging house, but she’s gotten much better in the two years she’s been around, though she still prefers to stay in the background and observe others, especially when someone new comes a long. She goes people-watching (often, as expected, from high in a tree) in crowded areas, spending a lot of her time trying to figure out how and why people act the way they do. Sometimes she just likes making up stories in her head about the lives of strangers. She still doesn’t know how to express herself well, though; when she gets angry, her words come out jumbled and she gets more upset, often running off crying after an argument.
Hobbies and interests: Tree got her nickname from her talent for climbing trees - a survival skill she picked up while living on the streets - and her habit of sitting in trees to think, or even sleep. As a result of being cooped up as a kid, she likes being outside and she really likes picking up pretty flowers and autumn leaves (and anything else bright and colorful, really) that she then uses to decorate the lodging house.
Bad habits, criminal record, etc: Tree is a terrible nail-biter, and if her nails get too short for her teeth to destroy, she’ll pick at them with her pocket knife, which she also often uses to impulsively chop off bits of her hair. She has other OCD-like nervous habits of counting and rearranging things, and she hates being interrupted while doing things, especially cleaning or organizing. She hoards anything and everything that comes into her possession, especially money, and she’s very protective of her belongings. (She kind of neurotic, really.) She has been known to steal when survival depends on it, but never so extravagantly that she’s been caught. Tree despises the smells of cigarettes and alcohol because they remind her of her parents.
Employment: newsgirl
Background info: Tree’s birth was an accident. Her parents didn’t want her (and her mother, especially, resented her), so they decided to “at least make her useful.” She wasn’t allowed to leave the house, except to go up on the roof of their apartment, and she never got an education except in cooking, cleaning, sewing, and other such household tasks. Tree spent the first fourteen years of her life as little more than a servant to her parents, who eventually got tired of feeding her. One night, she overheard plans to get rid of her - whether that meant selling her off to another family or throwing her in the river, she wasn’t sure - so she ran away and lived on the streets for a few months before finding the lodging house. She still worries that her parents might see her on the street and force her to come home with them, but some part of her knows that, in truth, they probably wouldn’t even stop to look at her.
