Risk walked quietly next to Macbeth, his hands stuffed in his pockets as he glanced at her then back to the ground. "You look nice." (( ))

(( ;D))
Macbeth almost tripped going down the porch steps. "This really ain't a good time to tease me," she informed him, eyes narrowing. After a moment of consideration, she added, "There really ain't any good time to tease me."

"Hey, I wasn't teasing you!" retorted Risk, quite offended that she hadn't caught on to his compliment. "I just never seen you all dressed up like this before, that's all."

"It's stupid," Beth muttered, crossing her arms over her chest self-consciously and missing her frumpy black dresses. She felt exposed somehow. She had to resist the urge to check her petticoats and make sure her knives were still in place. "You think of anything to tell your boss?" she asked after a while, and after making sure no one else was within hearing range.

"Tell me, Macbeth, what's the first thing I did today?" muttered Risk, shooting her a look. They'd only discussed this last night and he was already put on the spot.

She gave him a look that said he might have possibly actually scored a point. "Well, it could've come to you in a dream or something. Beer can be real inspirational."

"I'm sure it is for you," he teased, shaking his head. "But no, nothing right now. Give me a couple more days and ask me again."

She nodded thoughtfully, trying to imagine him hiding his identity as a cop, trying to protect his sister from a murder rap, and helping her fight for custody of her niece. And she didn't even know if he had more deep, dark secrets she hadn't discovered yet. "You have a talent for getting into trouble, y'know that?" Just like me.

"I wouldn't say it's a talent," replied Risk, shrugging. "It's more of... a curse. I really don't try to get in trouble, I swear... I just happen to be in the middle of it all."

"So you just happen to be a cop in a lodging house full of newsies?" she asked with a smirk. "And you just happen to be drunk half the time and hung over the other half? 'Cause in that case, I just happen to have this nasty mouth that gets me soaked all the time. It's a curse. Honest."

"Alright, fine, you made your point," said Risk, rolling his eyes at her. "But how was I supposed to know that Adri went and... y'know, did all that stuff? Not my fault!"

"Didn't say it was," she snapped. She still hadn't fully accepted that her angelic best friend was an accomplice in a murder. "I'm sure she had her reasons. You're gonna have to talk to her about it. Or else I will." He couldn't possibly expect to keep all these secrets from his sister forever.

"I'll, uh, get there," muttered Risk, dreading the day Adri would find out everything. "So, we're picking up Jo? Where are we gettin' her again?"

"An orphanage right by the bridge...but on the wrong side," Beth said with a sigh. "Thought we might stop by Spot and Raven's apartment first, though. It's only a few blocks from the bridge, and they know about Jo...I just wanna talk to 'em." She lapsed into an uneasy silence, wondering whether she looked as nervous as she felt. She hated the rare occasions when her nerves of steel failed her.

"About what?" asked Risk curiously, noticing the change in her behavior. "Hey, uh, you alright? You sure wanna talk to Spot?"
