Macbeth's eyebrows went up as she gave him a sardonic look. "Are you actually making a suggestion? No orders, no threats? Are you feeling sick? Is the world ending?" She crossed her arms, her eyes boring into him meaningfully. "I'll be selling right here in the park." No way in hell was she letting him and Jo out of her sight.
She kissed Jo and set her down reluctantly. "Play with Mikey for a while, kid. And play nice." And she marched off with her papers before she could say anything worse to Tristan.

Tristan smirked, "Yeah yeah, shut it." He said to Macbeth.
"Alright let's go feed the ducks." He said as he took Jo's hand. He kept Mikey on his hip.
"Ready?" He asked her as he started to walk off, Jo toddling along next to him.

"DUCK!" Jo shouted triumphantly, loudly enough that other people in the park turned to stare. Aunt Beth brought her to the park a lot, and she knew a duck when she saw one.
Macbeth heard it from about thirty feet away and winced at the volume of her voice, then chuckled to herself. Keeping an eagle eye on Tristan and the two kids, she hawked the same headlines she'd been hawking all day, selling at a decent pace, and more relieved by the brief break from parenting than she cared to admit.

"Yeah duck!" Tristan said to her with a smile as they headed to the pond in central park. Mikey kept looking down at her and then would look at his dad.
"Da..." he said. When they reached the Duck pond Tristan crouched down onto the ground. He took some stale bread from his pocket and broke up some crumbs.
"Alright Jo, go ahead give them some," he said, putting the crumbs in her free head before walking her over to the pond.

Jo looked down at the crumbs...and ate them.

Tristan laughed, "You weren't supposed to eat those," He said, "Look." He crumbled up some more and tossed them into the water. A few ducks swam over and started pecking at them.
"See?"

Jo looked from him to the crumbs like she was starting to get the right idea. She grabbed another handful from him...and threw it all over Mikey.
Watching from a distance, Macbeth was shaking so hard with silent laughter that she could barely sell her papers. Please, Jo, keep on tormenting him in any way you can.

Mikey literally went "Rar!" and slapped her.
"Michael!" Tristan exclaimed shocked. "You never hit girls, ever." He said angrily and scooped his son up into his arms.
"And you," he said to Jo as he held her hand. "Stop torturing your brother. One day you'll be thankful he's there."

Jo gave him a puzzled look. She was trying to do the kid a favor. The ducks liked the crumbs, why didn't Mikey? She tried throwing them at Tristan instead.

Tristan laughed. "Okay, you want some too?" Tristan tossed some at her stomach gently, smiling. He handed some to Mikey.
"Go ahead," Mikey opened his hand and let the crumbs fall on the floor.

Jo giggled, eating her crumbs and trying to catch Mikey's. And finally, just for the hell of it, she threw some to the ducks.
Macbeth had convinced herself it was safe to look away long enough to sell five or six papers. When she looked back and saw the kids interacting, her usual scowl reappeared. Now I'm gonna hafta start arranging goddamn playdates.

Tristan laughed and let them play at it for a little while, watching his kids interact. It felt so good to see them together.
"Hey, don't get too close to the water." He wrapped his arm around Jo's waist and pulled her back a little.

Jo flailed when he grabbed her, then toppled over and landed on her butt. She looked up at him in surprise, then started making some sloppy, unsophisticated mud pies.
She's gonna ruin her dress, Beth thought, and then, with a measure of wicked satisfaction, Tristan'll buy her a new one.

Tristan laughed and then kissed the top of her head. He grabbed Mikey and sat him down in his lap. He just watched her play.

When Macbeth had finally sold all her papers, she went over to collect her niece. It was time to grab lunch somewhere and rest before the evening edition. "I guess keeping her clean would've been too much to ask," she muttered, scooping up Jo, who immediately threw her arms around Beth's neck and snuggled against her. Beth stroked her hair, completely ignoring the mud that now spattered her own dress. Not a day ever passed when she wasn't covered in dirt, blood, or some other unpleasant substance, so why should today be different?
Glancing at Tristan, she hesitated before walking away. "She oughta meet her sister too."
