He smiled at her, a little brighter this time. "Yer gorgeous without even tryin', Kat. And yeah, I'm definitely startin' ta feel a little better." God, but was she cute when she blushed.
Maggie watched him out of the corner of her eye as they ate in silence. She could practically see the wheels turning in his head. After a few minutes, she put down her spoon, took another sip of coke, then angled herself to look at him. "Penny for your thoughts?"

Kathryn stood up then, smoothing down her uniform. "Well, I should let you rest, Private. I'll see you tomorrow."
Teddy sighed, glancing over at her. "I would join your protest if I could. All these people keep thankin' me and bein' nice to me when they don't even know who I am. They don't know..."
((I'm going to go watch the South African rugby game - it's the quarter finals of the World Cup! But I'll be back in about 40 minutes.))

Tyler kissed her fingers one last time before letting go of her hand. "I'll see ya tomorrow, Sugar." He gave her a smile and another wink. She was the perfect kind of distraction. ((We can fast forward to a time when he can do more useful things like walk, haha)) Maggie reached out for his hand, giving it a squeeze. "Hey...you done eating? Let's get outta here, yeah?" He looked like he needed to talk, and the middle of Ben's Chili Bowl was probably not the best place for a potential breakdown. ((Haha, no problem! I'll be here Yay, West Coast time!))

Over the next couple weeks, Kathryn tried her best to steer clear of Private McGowan; he was just the kind of distraction she didn't need. She kept her guard up while she was working, and immediately left the clinic once her shift ended. But now his wound was healing and he was walking... It was only a matter of time before he caught her.
Teddy nodded, wiping his mouth with his napkin before setting it on the empty plate. He shouldered his pack and followed Maggie out of the restaurant.

The last couple of weeks had been more or less miserable for Tyler. His leg hurt like a bitch, and the one person he looked forward to the most was avoiding him like the plague. But at least he was walking again. Well, maybe not walking. More like hobbling with a cane for ten minutes before he had to sit down again. It was late one night and he couldn't sleep, so he was up, standing over by a window.
Maggie draped her guitar over her shoulder and led him out, just walking in silence for a while. Finally, she asked, "Where are you staying? Did you get a hotel room or something?" She let herself take his hand again, holding it as they walked.

Kathryn was working the night shift, which was usually her favorite shift. She didn't have to worry about wandering hands or pathetic pleas for her to stay when she needed to go check on the other patients. She walked into the clinic with a purpose, but stopped when she saw a familiar figure standing by the window.
"Nah, I'm catching a bus back home in an hour or so," he replied, trying not to stare down at their joined hands. This girl was something else.

Tyler shifted on his cane to look back when he heard footsteps. When he saw Kathryn, he smirked a little weakly, giving her a small wave. He'd missed her.
Maggie felt her heart sink, then was surprised by how disappointed she felt that he was leaving. "Oh. Well, yeah, of course. You'll wanna be getting home, and all..." She looked down at the sidewalk.

"Evening, Private," she greeted him before retrieving her trusty clipboard and checking who needed their medication. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm here for three weeks, though. Probably do some sightseeing before I leave. How long are you here for?" He glanced over at her, wondering why she looked so solemn.

He hobbled over to her, trying to hide his wince. "I'm alright. I'm surprised yer even acknowledging my presence." He shot her a smirk, brow arched. "Me and Nurse Helen have become real good friends lately, since ya've basically ignored me." He tried to keep his voice light, but he wasn't able to completely hide the disappointment.
She glanced back up at him. "Until I run out of money and have to go home." She smirked a little. "I'm on a bit of a...sabbatical, so to speak. Mom's ticked."

"I haven't been ignoring you," she replied matter of factly. "It's time for your medicine." She set the clipboard down and went over to the large cabinet, fetching him two pain pills before filling up a glass of water. "Sit," she ordered once she had rejoined him by his cot.
"Don't you have to go back to school, though?" he asked, his eyebrows lowered in concern. He would do anything to be in school right now, but the draft had caught him before he could enroll anywhere.

He did as he was told because his knee was starting to hurt again. He grunted just a little as he shifted, getting comfortable, propping his bad leg up on a couple pillows. "Ya have too been ignorin' me, Kat. Don't pretend otherwise." He took the pills, swallowing them, then set the water aside on the table by his bed. "The question is, why."
"Well, I was a semester ahead, anyway, so I just took the semester off. I don't have to go back until January." She looked up at him. "I was starting to feel so...trapped. And helpless. I wanted to do something useful, something...important. When a couple classmates of mine said they were heading East, I went with them."

"I've been busy. I do have a job to do," she replied as she kept her eyes on her clipboard. She scribbled something down before going back to the cabinet for another soldier's medicine.
Teddy nodded slowly, avoiding the gaze of some passersby. "So, besides the protest, what else are you gonna do?"

He sighed, watching her. "Did I do somethin' wrong, Kat? If I did, I'm sorry." He couldn't figure it out. He was sure that day they talked had gone well, had made her see him as a person and not just a patient.
"I have absolutely no idea." She laughed a little. "It took us two weeks of hitch hiking and bus riding to get here in the first place. Now...well, now I'm sharing a motel room with the two girls and one guy I came with, plus three other people we met when we got here." She shook her head. "It's kind of a mess. But I guess that's what makes it exciting."

"Nurse Kathryn," she reminded him, shooting him a disapproving look at his casual address. "And you've done nothing wrong. There's no need to apologize. Now, I have work to do, Private." Kathryn went about with her duties, handing out medicine, changing bandages, and making small talk with the other soldiers as she did so.
"See, I'm looking for the opposite of exciting," Teddy replied with a laugh. "I just want to relax and not think about anything but my mama's turkey and dressing."

Tyler frowned, watching her. He let out a frustrated huff of air, leaning back against his pillows and rolling his head away from her. In his head, he muttered a string of curses, annoyed, hurt and pissed off at her. And maybe himself, just a little.
"Turkey and dressing sounds amazing." She smiled brightly. "I'm pretty sure I'm spending Thanksgiving at the Chinese restaurant next to the motel."
