"Understandable," he agreed, wondering why other couples' problems always seemed to revolve around sex. His revolved around complicated emotional issues that he could hardly even define half the time. "Just say the word whenever you want me to baby-sit. Or bring over a few cartons of pasta from Mama's."

"Race, do I really have to give you the work to bring me pasta from Mama's? I'm sure Spot would appreciate it to." She studied him for a minute and then crossed your arms.
"You and Sapphy okay?"

He sighed and flopped onto the couch with Sean on his chest. "I think so? I mean, I know we're okay, it's just that she's...I dunno, seemed kinda tired. And lately, she don't talk about what she's been up to when she ain't selling or with me--like she ain't been up to much of anything." He shrugged, then smiled at her. "But we should be talking 'bout you and Spot! You really think he's ready for this?"

"Absolutely not, he is so not ready...which is why it isn't happening right away." Raven smiled at Race and sat down next to him on the couch. Sean started to get cranky.
"Face him outward, he likes to look around." She said to Race and then leaned over and kissed the top of Sean's head.
"Also, no, me and Spot are fucked up. I know, but you and Sapphy shouldn't be. What do you think she's doing in her spare time?"

He sat up and turned Sean around, letting the tiny little fellow sit in his lap. "I dunno...worrying? About what, I don't know, but she worries sometimes." By which I mean that her thoughts go dark and start taking over and driving her to do terrible things, and I'm scared that it's happening again. But he'd never talked to anyone, not even Rae, about Sapphy's troubles. They were Sapphy's to talk about, if she chose to.

Sean was not content and stuck his fingers in his mouth to prove it.
"What is she worrying about? She has you, has a place to live, has money to eat..." Raven sighed. "She needs to stop worrying. There is nothing to worry about."

"Sometimes it ain't that simple," Race said, realizing he couldn't even articulate Sapphy's issues if he wanted to. He just knew intuitively that they were real and beyond her control. He looked down at Sean and smirked. "What, are you gonna start sulking on me? Here, take a look at this." He pulled out his pocket watch and dangled it in front of Sean's face. The kid could grab at it all he wanted, but Race was ready to pull it back the instant it went near his mouth.

Raven watched Sean trying to grab the pocket watch a stupid grin on his face and she shook her head.
"Maybe...I dunno, but I've stopped worrying about the small things since Sean. I worry more about him, actually I worry about him all the time." Raven said with a small smile. "He likes your watch."

"He has good taste," Race said with a grin, envisioning a slightly older Sean decked out in plaid. It was already obvious that he and Spot would be battling for this kid's soul, resulting in some freakish hybrid of a badass street fighter and a friendly, wisecracking gambler. "And you shouldn't worry about him. He's got you and Spot for parents--nothing's ever gonna get through the two of youse to hurt him. 'Sides, he's already got a mind of his own."

"Oh he definitely does. If you don't sit with him like that he'll be screaming, I swear. He needs to see the whole world or he starts freaking out. Also, he smirks when he wants to be charming." Sean gurgled at her and Rae leaned closer smiling.
"You do, silly boy, yes you do. And when he is annoyed he grunts...like a little pig, I kind of love that sound. When he wakes up, he grunts like 'oh another day, life is so hard.'"

"I know just how you feel, kid," Race said, ruffling his hair--or rather, the one or two strands of hair on his bald little head. "Just wait'll you've got a job, and a bunch of friends with really dramatic lives, and gambling debts, and maybe a girl."

Sean just blinked, like babies did and then started to close his eyes. He grunted because he didn't want to sleep. Sean never wanted to sleep.
"Oh God...please can we not put all that on him right now." Raven said, sounding horrified. "Put him in the crook of your arm, he's going to pass out on us." She grinned.

"Don't worry," Race assured her, "he's got a good ten years, at least." He tucked Sean into the crook of his arm and quietly put away his watch. Watching the stubborn baby try and fight back sleep, Race wondered whether you were supposed to feel this way about a kid who wasn't yours. Well, he'd have some of his own someday. Probably. He always felt a little odd thinking about the distant future, as if he was never going to have one--probably a side effect of growing up in Brooklyn.

"Race...I love watching you with my kid. I just had to say that," Raven smiled. "You're better with him than his father. Sometimes Spot has no idea what to do."
Sean waved his fists, eyes half open, grunt, grunt, gurgle. His eyes closed, hands opened and then closed, his arm flopped to the side and he was asleep.

"I love spending time with him," Race admitted. "But I'm sure Spot's trying his best...he is trying, right?" he added nervously. He was trying to dismiss his doubts about a lifetime commitment between Raven and Spot, but it would never work out if Spot wasn't already fully committed to fatherhood.
